August 17, 20196 yr When healthy and rust-free, Eloy has actually been very good this year, and you can tell over the last week or so that his quality of contact has gotten much better. He has had some horrible luck in this Angels series though.
August 17, 20196 yr so can we have Engel play defense and Eloy bat? Seriously though Eloy needs ALOT of improvement out there. Puny arm and loafs... get that ass moving out there. Edited August 17, 20196 yr by harkness99

August 17, 20196 yr There really should never be a negative word written about Eloy, especially by fans of the rebuild. Most of the rebuild people have said all along we won't be any good until 2021 or later. The rebuild people tell you not to rush players and when they come up there will be a period of adjustment/improvement before young players presumably all take off as all-star talents about the same time. Thus one or two WS titles. So Eloy is 22 and in his "getting adjusted" stage. You better believe the Sox will have him work on his defense this winter or whenever. Maybe in the fall when the team is sitting home again. Eloy has already shown he's a superstar in the making, a guy if healthy who is going to hit 40 homers a season without exception. Why talk about Eloy. Let him turn into the superstar he's going to be. He's not going to look like a clown defensively his whole career, folks.

Puny arm and loafs... get that ass moving out there. Many posters have referred to Jimenez's "noodle arm". Eliminating loafing, proper positioning, throwing to the correct base, etc. can be taught. Can a noodle arm be strengthened or is he destined to never throw out a runner at home or at least keep base runners from running on him at will?

That's why Eloy was expendable. If Eloy was a stellar outfielder, he'd be in the Cubs line-up. Eloy is a DH. Kenny-Hahn need to face the facts. Edited August 18, 20196 yr by GradMc

August 19, 20196 yr Eloy threw a strike to the catcher from mid deep LF in today's game against the Angels. The commentator with Benetti was impressed at Eloy's speed on the bases and his closing speed getting to fly balls in the outfield. I agree with him. Eloy is going to surprise cubs fans and others who think he is a lumbering loafer with a noodle arm. They are wrong.
August 19, 20196 yr Eloy has to make aporoach adjustments and start pulling the ball a little more. There is no reason to be worried about him offensively. In the field I think he'll end up being serviceable but he's not going to be anything more than that imo. But that's fine when he's going to hit 40+ HRs a year.

What is the ChiSox coaching staff going to do to work on his arm strength/coaching? This seems more like a specialization of Rusty Kuntz working with Alex Gordon (who already possessed a true 3B's arm)...than anything we've ever seen in a puff piece about Daryll Boston's coaching acumen. In fact, I don't ever recall a puff piece from Merkin about Boston.

August 19, 20196 yr So basically we have no example of a White Sox coach turning an outfielder into anything resembling a solid defender when they started out well below average...

For some reason, RFer's (thinking guys here like Eaton, Garcia and Hunter Renfroe) really get a huge boost when they pile up double digit assist numbers from that position. Eaton got that huge bump when he moved from CF (where he struggled both defensively and staying healthy) to RF, which led directly to his one big fWAR season and the Gio/Lopez/Dunning deal. Of course, eventually it normalizes when opposing teams stop challenging them...I'm sure there's some obscure stat about the number of runners going from first to third or second to home on balls hit to them. I remember Podsednik was actually improved the second time around with the team, fwiw. Edited August 20, 20196 yr by caulfield12

Wouldn’t you know it, young players can actually get better with more time playing a position. Keep him in LF, see if he improves over time. He's adequate and getting better every day. Much bigger concerns than this.
