Need McCann and Grandal next year.

Featured Replies

We need to pay McCann and keep him on the team at all costs. He signed a 1 year deal for about 5.4 million and Hahn was stupid not put in a second year option with a buyout, are we really surprised he'd make a mistake like that???? He's Giolito's personal catcher. Yasmani will be the old Yasmani next year. We'll save some money when Encarnacion's 13 million off the books. Colome' will probably be gone, that's 10 million , Gio Gonzalez  5 million is gone. That's is 28 million. 2 years 15 million would be fair with a 3rd year option and buyout. he and Yasmani can switch off as DH's and when they both play Yasmani can play 1st and Abreu can DH for some rest.

We have all the young stars signed to team friendly contracts. they bullpen is young and cheap with tremendous potential. We still need another stud starter and the money is there,

Hahn has to step up and make this happen, we also have Vaughn waiting in the wings.

Holy shit, you've started more threads in your short tenure here than 99% of the posters do here.

1. McCann wants to be a starting catcher, not happening full time here. He will be in high demand especially when Realmuto signs in a place other than Philly. Going to get way more than 2 years and 15 mil.

2. If nothing else your last paragraph states why McCann will not be resigned. Vaughn will be here more than likely next season and is not coming up to sit the bench all year.

yes he wants to be a starter, But he'd still be a full time player with 60 to 70 games behind the plate and 60 to 70 games at DH. he'll be in 140 to 150 games. his career and Yasmani's will be extended greatly not having the wear and tear to catch 140 to 150 games. maybe 3 years 25 gets it done  with incentives to make another 2 or 3 million a year. He may also have an Abreu attitude and want to be here the next couple of years when this thing peaks. Just hoping, been waiting for another 2005 and hopefully it wouldn't be a 1 and done.

Believe I have 1 after 17 years. This isn’t Facebook or Twitter. ?

Add me. That's two.

I normally hate the rotating DH system but honestly it kind of works with this team.  Put a cheap backup on the bench, maybe trade Collins for something decent.  we can afford to have fewer players on the bench with this lineup anyways imo (meaning carrying 3 catchers would limit your bench option by at least 1 non-C position, but this lineup should be good enough to make that a non factor)

Like the other guy said, allows both catchers to stay healthier through a full season and both guys can get on base at a pretty decent clip.  I just dont see Vaughn splitting time with Jose between 1st and DH.  I could be wrong but I have a feeling Giolito and James have probably already this conversation about whether hes staying if hes given a QO, so for all we know the decision has already been made by James

As much as i want mccann back, if his market is more than $8 mil/yr, then hes probably not coming back.  Bauer and a closer need to be the top two priorities this offseason.  Most of the money coming off the books should go to bauer for next year.  Colome or hendricks need to be signed.  After that, if theres any money left over, it comes down to backup catcher and right field.

There's just not going to any playing time for James McCann with Jose Abreu and Andrew Vaughn on the roster.

Next lesson. Learn how a contract negotiation works

McCann is going to be like this offseason's Wheeler in a way, where Realmuto is the clear #1 guy, but the years and total money he will be looking for will bring bidding down to only a handful of teams, but then McCann is the clearcut #2 guy, and he will demand much less money and fewer years, so he will be much more attractive and will have a lot of suitors.

I expect the top of the catching market to be Realmuto, McCann, and Vazquez via trade, and most teams looking for a C will think McCann is the best fit, safest bet against a bad contract, and they will prefer a player they don't have to give up a haul for in a trade.  Also it is not a given whether the Sox will offer James a QO.  I would have said they wouldn't have before the season but now I'm not so sure.  If the Sox make the QO he could accept it.

The reason they signed McCann to a 1 year, $2.5M contract in 2019 was because he had be DFA'd the season before. However, he was still arbitration eligible due to service time - so they negotiated the 1 year, $5.4M contract. There was no sneaking in a second year option.

If you're going to make Soxtalk a personal blog, don't be a complete moron.

Not to mention, why would McCann give up a year of free agency in that situation to sign an undermarket extension?

James McCann will be a free agent.  He will sign an impressive free agent deal to be a starting catcher and play 130 games somewhere else, because we can't offer that to him.  Finally his numbers will regress to the norm once he isn't getting cherry picked to start for ideal match ups.

But since he’s a dramatically better player than he was 2 years ago, that “towards the norm” will still be a worthy starting catcher, potentially a better bargain than Grandal.

I think many here are severely overestimating what the market will think of McCann as a full time starting catcher

Gonna be hard for Vaughn to get many at bats when hes playing for another team

The Sox will definitely bid on McCann but the market may be delayed and depressed. We know his value.

Hahn can't just put a low ball option into the contract without McCann's approval. McCann did not want an option because he wants to be a starter and to hit free agency. Also, with Vaughn coming up, we can't hide him at DH while letting him catch part time. McCann is gone unless his market craters and he'd take limited playing time here.

Not really. He is worth 3 years and at least 24 million to a team with no other options. That may be to pricey for us, as hed probably play once or twice a week.

There aren't enough starting catchers to go around as it is.  The ONLY thing that MIGHT hold his value down in Covid economics.
