How does his contract work now and what does this mean for the cap? So they have a few options. But basically, Seabrook will remain on LTIR for the rest of his contract. His salary and cap hit stay on the books in the offseason. The Hawks will need to be under or at the 81.5 million dollar salary cap. However, once the season starts, Seabrook will be placed on LTIR and that cap hit comes off the books for the season, which means the Hawks could acquire a player to fit that salary window. But once the season ends......that Seabrook contract is back on the books until Day 1 of the NEXT season. That's why just acquiring another long term, expensive piece isn't that easy. Seattle and the expansion draft could be their shot to get them to take the Seabrook deal if they aren't planning on competing for a few years, but the Hawks would have to send over a fairly nice package for Seattle to accept. Hope that helps a little bit.
