The Chicago Tribune has consistently covered this story and the hosts on 670 the Score have talked about it quite a bit. If you grew up going to Bears games you would know what a pain it is to get to and from them after parking your car. It’s a loss for Chicago’s revenues, but this is something that is bound to happen so many people are indifferent or are happy about it. Some Arlington Heights residents are upset about it because they don’t want their town to turn into Wrigleyville and are worried about their tax bills getting hit, but their home valuations will rise.

Tax plan proposal filed in Springfield that could aid Bears’ proposed Arlington Heights development

Per the Chicago Tribune article:

“Legislation was filed in Springfield on Monday that could help the Chicago Bears finance their proposed development in Arlington Heights by freezing the property tax assessment on the former Arlington International Racecourse property for up to 40 years.

The plan, which would require the Bears to invest at least $500 million in converting the 326-acre site to a stadium and surrounding mixed-use development, has been floated for weeks and is being met with some skepticism, even from the state lawmaker who filed the legislation.”

I discussed the bolded with two people at work who live in Illinois and they looked at me funny. Like why would the Jacksonville Jaguars want to come to Chicago and play in this cold and in Soldier Field. They didn’t think the town was large enough to have two football teams. My counter was Khan’s connection to Illinois, the fact that there will be a vacant stadium that he could upgrade and the fact that a team from Jacksonville could jump at the chance of being in the Chicago market.

The taxpayers of Illinois and Arlington Heights are going to be asked to pick up a significant part of the tab in building a new Bears stadium and entertainment district. I say hell no to all of that. I'm cool with the Bears moving but they should have to finance everything themselves like Sofi stadium was.  Or the Bears could just take out a nice loan from the NFL to help finance the stadium.

Also, those 90 minute drives are gonna be a real problem for all those 6pm Friday night Bears games...

Depends on what is given to Khan in a Soldier Field rebuild.

Stop thinking of it is Jacksonville.  It is an entity that it is one of 32 NFL football franchises and what Khan and his family is looking to spend his money on.  The "fans" in LA cannot support one football team yet now they have two.

You build two billion dollars project over the next 8 years...which thrives Arlington Heights or Chicago?  As far as football goes, Soldier Field would be filled with visiting team's fans looking to enjoy the city....at least until mid-December

Can't always trust the phone. It will turn into more than 37 minutes once you start your journey. 

Wanna do a bet? Leave from Soldier Field in you car on a random Sunday afternoon at 3PM. I'll bet you $500 that you cannot make the drive to downtown Arlington Heights in 35 minutes or less.

Ha. It is a terrible terrible bet from your side because you are pretty much guaranteed to lose. It's a great great bet for me. 

I've done that drive more times than I care to remember. No need to do it again. 

 

but the nice thing about arlington is you can leave early sunday, spend all day there tailgating and enjoying the additional facilities built around and for the stadium experience.

If arlington was just solving traffic issues, yes. It's not.

But the point is soldier field is behind the highways that segregate the city from the lake. It's in a big field. There's not much of a tailgating culture because of lack of parking lots, and there's nothing there beside the stadium.

It's beautiful land. But chicago is such a big 10 city, and I think that's a big part of the ticket holders as well. I'm sure they want more of that all day fun.

I'm looking forward to it, this will be an awesome process to watch.

Yeah I got no major qualms about the Bears leaving Soldier. I got family in AH so gonna be awesome from my perspective to take a (hopefully) 10 minute Uber across town to the new stadium. 

I just don't want to see the taxpayers of Illinois be on the hook for financing a good chunk of the new stadium/district. Let the Bears and the NFL figure out the financing and leave public funds out of it. I also don't think the Bears have much leverage here as there is no way they are leaving the Chicago market. Going to be an interesting and awesome process to watch no doubt.

The only thing keeping them from AH is the $2B city paid renovation of the lake front which includes access to I 55 and LSD more smoothly and moving public transit into the complex. 

My hope is that this brings an end to the lake front old McCormick place building and a casino included in there.  My lord the city has messed the casino project up.

I think AH will be giving a pretty big subsidy, but it will probably be largely in the form of a tax credit - limiting the taxes collected from the businesses developed on that land - rather than the city paying to build the park itself. That is different from what we’ve seen with Comiskey or the Soldier Field refits.
