Let's wait to see if they are able to make any moves. They will probably do something because they are fortunate to be a .500 team playing in a bad division and only 2 games out. In most seasons, this wouldn't be a team I would be willing to make any significant moves - it's really up to the talent on this roster to live up to their hype. Does adding a decent starter like Quintana really change their fortunes? He could have helped, but it probably doesn't change the White Sox path for this season without their top heavy talent playing the way they were projected.

They didn't exactly treat the off-season with much urgency to make meaningful upgrades at 2B, RF or to replace Rodon. They do like spending on their bullpen though. Again, not to say they won't make a meaningful move by tomorrow. We'll see.

August 2, 20223 yr Jose Quintana and righty Chris Stratton from the Pirates. In return, the Pirates are receiving righty Johan Oviedo and minor league third baseman Malcolm Nunez. Anyone have any insight on the return?

Malcolm Nunez (AA) is now 11th on the Pirates Top 30 prospects. Oviedo is a 24 year old middle reliever, pitched well this season, had brief callups during age 22/23 seasons. The White Sox equivalent would be perhaps Andrew Dalquist and Davis Martin. https://www.mlb.com/prospects/pirates/ https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/o/oviedjo01.shtml Edited August 2, 20223 yr by South Side Hit Men

We probably could have beat it if we wanted to, especially if the trade didn't include Stratton. Oviedo is 24 and no longer a prospect. Nunez is 21 and in AA. I'm guessing the Pirates probably wanted Kelley or maybe even Vera and Hahn said no. Which is probably the smart move. Edited August 2, 20223 yr by chw42
August 2, 20223 yr Using fangraphs' ratings, and aside from the reliever side of this deal, it would be like trading Sosa for Quintana. The Cards farm was evaluated in July and the Sox in April.
August 2, 20223 yr Lol Hahn coming to grips with what he has wrought. I’m sure his budget has not increased, he has no farm to sell, and his team has too many issues to prioritize. Just at home, coddling his many degrees.
August 2, 20223 yr Q signed for $2 million. RH paid VV $3 million. The old Nightengale tweet makes me laugh. The Sox were looking for Robbie Ray and Marcus Semien, yet wound up with VV and Big Energy. Edited August 2, 20223 yr by Dick Allen

They try yo jump the market with a low ball offer thinking guys will panic. It "worked" with Grandal because as we all can see he had reason to panic.
