On the call with Venable, one of the press corps asked,

”In addition to your positive impression of Chris Getz, what else about this team attracted you to this position and gave you confidence to take the job as manager?”

His response brings me deep dread:

”I played against this team last year and saw them all bring energy and go out there and compete every day.”

He most certainly was not watching the same team that we were. What in the world?!?

He has to say something.  I wouldn't worry about it.

It's a narrative crushing hire.  They didn't hire the LaRussa guy, the cheap guy or the ex-Royal guy.  They hired the best available young manager who has turned down other manager jobs which means Ch

So say something that isn’t blatantly a lie. 🤷🏻‍♂️

What else is he supposed to say? They sucked ass and I said yes cuz I was sick of waiting for Bochy to retire? Of course he's going to be complimentary of his new team. I would take answers like that with a grain of salt.

He could say something that wasn’t so obviously untrue to any random Sox fan that watched a few games last year.

I know it’s all fluff but a quote like this just remind me of Awful Grifol.  You don’t have to sugarcoat everything, especially not one of the worst teams in major league history.

Maybe he did think they brought energy, but just completely lacked the talent to compete? They did lose a s%*# ton of close games because they couldn't score or hold leads.

“I see some promise in some of the young players here and I think we can begin to build a winning culture, and eventually a winning team.”

It’s really not that hard to not blatantly lie.

That sounds better, but is it any better? That's still a lot of vague generalities that don't really mean anything, and feel just as fluffy to me.

Texas swept the season series in 2024, but only one game was a blowout. Maybe he thought the Sox played them tough? IDK.

He said he saw them show energy. He didn't say they were good.

Turns him around. "No, those are your players"

"Oh I'm fucked. I'm never drinking with Tony again."

Like I said above, respond with some semblance of honesty. Leaves a bad taste in mouth for him to placate last years team as anything remotely close to sound.

I didn’t see much energy 😆 Perhaps they did show some and I just did not watch said game… that’s one thing I’m forgetting here… I didn’t watch games last year with nearly as much frequency.

ALL of the games I did watch however, they looked dead.

Right on - that makes more sense, I suppose. Just the way that he stated his response made me do an immediate double take.

Sounds a hell of a lot better than giving an impression that he was impressed by what he say as an opponent last year being a deciding factor of taking this job.

I’m gonna go watch a replay of a random Texas game as a thought experiment and as a way to detract myself from the chaotic state of my life at present time. 😆😵‍💫😆

Let's not forget ripping on the guys who are likely comprising 2/3rds of his 2025 roster probably isn't the best approach when Grifol already tried that approach and it only served to unify the players against him.

I thought they played hard all season. They were just terrible. Robert was the only guy who seemed  like he didn't give a s%*#.

Yeah it never really looked like they didn’t care. They just sucked (and were probably very frustrated at times).

Benintendi the first 3-4 months...before the managerial change.

You don't believe that at all. LOL.

Game 2 of the home series, Travis Jankowski robbed a 3-run Vaughn HR in the bottom of the 9th to save a victory.

Sounds like he will be a good drinking buddy for LaRussa.

Yeah but we also witnessed crap like the hustling Cleveland batter beating a lolligagging Andrew Vaughn to first base.  There was zero energy.

The most painful call of the season IMO by Schriffen…. In a way that people who could actually relate to for once.

You know he was responding to “What else is he supposed to say” don’t you?  Why else would he put it in quotes?
