Keith Law's Top 100 prospects out

Q: Why is it that a Japanese player posting from the NPB and following a free agent process is allowed to be listed on a Top 100 prospects list that can directly influence the drafting of whatever team signs them? The obvious example here is the Roki Sasaki posting, signing with the Dodgers who are already a front-runner and making the Top 100 list which then makes the Dodgers eligible for a PPI pick.

It just seems like a very "have your cake, eat it, then eat the other guy's cake too" moment. Shouldn't MLB-level talent coming from an established baseball league, that follows a normal free agent process, be ineligible to be on a Top 100 Prospects list or even ineligible to be a rookie?

Roki Sasaki is an international amateur so he counts. It wasn't this way last year for Yamamoto for example.

    Law on Monty.

  • Rookie status eligibility is 130 at bats, 50 IP or 45 days on active roster. Those are the parameters that we use for prospect eligibility at FutureSox and it's basically what everyone uses other than

  • Why are we writing off a 18 year power hitting prospect who just finished his 1st year of pro ball?

He's only 23. And it wasn't "a normal free agent process."

They need to hire whoever worked with Campbell in the BOS sysytem to help out both Montgomery's for the White Sox...

"Campbell has changed his swing since being drafted out of Georgia Tech, and when asked about it, he answered simply, “It’s been all about bat path.” He went on, “Instead of being flat, or straight down, I’m trying to hit the ball at a good angle. That’s what I lacked coming into pro baseball, hitting the ball in the air. I never really hit for power before last year.”

The numbers bear that out. We don’t have batted ball stats for Campbell’s 2023 season at Georgia Tech, but in his 22 games in the Red Sox organization, he ran a 50% groundball rate. That number dropped to 43% in 2024. Not at all coincidentally, Campbell’s isolated slugging percentage rose from .162 to .228."

Talk about unlocking Romy Gonzalez's potential with launch angle...Roman Anthony as well.

Yes, that's why he and Ohtani were ranked but Yamamoto and next year 3B Murakami won't be...same as Ichiro at 27.

I am very interested to see where Teel ends up. i think Teel, Quero and could be a real good 1B, DH, C rotation, but interested to see whom sticks at 1st with Andrew most likely playing his last year with the team (I think he get's flipped for a weak prospect this summer). How this team doesn't have a real 1B prospect is just incredible. Elko, Wolkow don't seem like major league players.

Here’s how Red Sox hitting coordinator John Soteropulos described to Laurila what the team wanted Campbell to work on:

"His development program focused on two key objectives, improving ball flight and increasing bat speed. On the ball flight front, we identified specific bio-mechanical markers in his swing that needed refinement. The most significant factor affecting his bat path was the way his torso moved throughout the swing. Since the bat rotates around the spine, his excessive forward lean toward the pitcher created a steep bat path with low attack angles. We implemented a structured training program designed to address these inefficiencies, alongside other areas of focus.”

...They’re (Red Sox) embracing biomechanical analysis, which is the new frontier in player in development.

If you go to John Soteropulos' Twitter page, there's a MASSIVE treasure drove of hitting, biomechanical and weight training related stuff.

Robert Montgomery Montgomery Teel Quero Vargas Sosa Meidroth Ramos Wolkow...work with all those m'f'in guys.

I don't think he's a 1b prospect but Wolkow is only like 18. He has time to improve and he at least does have power potential

They either have major red flags, or very limited ceilings, depending on which one you are talking about.

K rate...

K rate...

Currently around 40%.  What he does with it will likely decide his future.

One thing about Wolkow that immediately stood out watching a few games on TV is the dude moves really well. He's a legitimate athlete, given enough development time I don't see why he can't be a plus outfielder. The strike out rate is less of a concern if he shows noticible improvement year to year. If he's in AA at age 20 with a 25% k-rate I think everyone will be content.

“Meet the Sox guy we didn’t think was good enough for top 100” is such weird phrasing lol

Sure, but tons of people will tune it just for it.

Sean Burke, RHP, Chicago White Sox

Height: 6-6 | Weight: 230 | Bats: R | Throws: R | Age: 25

You’d be forgiven for wondering if I made Sean Burke up, as he’s thrown 252 total innings since he was drafted in July 2021 and spent time on the 60-day injured list in both 2023 and 2024. He did make his major-league debut in September, however, and despite all of his arm woes, the stuff was electric: He sat 94-96 with life up on the four-seamer, topping out at 99, and showed a plus curveball that could be a 70 with a ton of two-plane break. He also throws a mid-80s cutter/slider hybrid — Statcast calls it a slider, it looks more like a cutter, but that’s probably just semantics — and a changeup that’s a clear fourth pitch and that he will have to improve, as he already showed a modest platoon split in the minors last year.

His delivery is good enough for him to have at least average control, and he gets excellent extension over his front side. If he stays off the injured list, and just improves the changeup a little bit through repetitions, he’s a potential No. 3 starter. I worry that it’s either that or nothing, given his checkered health history.

I have to imagine a write up for Grant Taylor would be similar, but with a higher ceiling.  We have got to get some of these guys to stay healthy.

Forgot to copy it, but Law destroyed Montgomery in his chat.
