Venable might want to rethink having no identified closer.  Not that he was managing this one they just lost.

If he's Dustin Pedroia Lite as some claim...why throw away an extra year of control when we're deliberately sandbagging the season for 2026 draft positioning? For one month of mostly cold weather baseball?

And if spring training play was completely meaningless, Drury wouldn't be making the team.  Neither would Jankowski based on last season, but Venable trusts him as a glue player.

It's kind of silly to stick Sosa at DH when they still need to decide if he can play any infield position competently...just like Vargas at 3B and 1B.

Yup on a team going nowhere fast is especially when should be throwing out spring and going by who has performed as a minor league player and find out ASAP if they are AAAA or legit MLB players backups or otherwise. Lets see what we got in the guy.

His arm is closer to Madrigal than Royce Clayton....which is hardly a compliment.

Meidroth has only played 199 minor league games (as of last year in late June). He is not a finished product, and it will be years before he is. But, his development and early success are encouraging signs for a Red Sox organization in the early stages of building their next young core at the major league level.

There is something to be said for having the rookies go through their growing pains this year and be ready to produce next year.

I don’t disagree with you…but spring training untimely is pretty meaningless.  If you believe in Meidrtoh, it’s because of a full season of AAA at-bats and not a couple spring training ones.

Sure...when someone has clearly won the job, that's fine.

If he was swinging the bat well but lining into outs all over the place that would be one thing.

Why take a slumping hitter into the cold weather to win MAYBE one extra game in April?  Will it sell one more ticket?  Probably just a handful.

There will be more rainouts anyway compared to Charlotte.

Meidroth Baldwin Ramos Elko Fletcher Colas and DeLoach can play everyday with Narvaez/Teel/Quero...however they want to divide up playing time.

Maybe Omar is traded or DFAed to clear the runway.

I’m normally against the manipulation, but why not here? A month of cold weather games. Even the Sox road trips are to cold places.  IMO, spring training stats are useless, but the team is not trying to win so why not hold it against him? It’s also true he has nothing more to prove in AAA, but so what? If he somehow develops into a really good player, no matter who owns the team at the time will be happy with the extra year of control. Call him up in a month and let him play.

I don’t think it affects Sosa at all. He won’t be playing shortstop. Try and come up with 13 players without Meidroth. It’s not easy.

So what is your alignment?

If it was simply Meidroth 2B, Rojas 3B and Sosa at SS...at least you would have solid/decent defense at 2/4 infield positions...and Vargas is eventually if not already better than Vaughn too.

So just DH Vaughn.

It's like they cleared SS for Montgomery and now don't have a clue how to close the gap without everyone playing their weaker positions.

 

i love Sosa's style of offense (launch angle) but he is barely 2b. the writeups we saw about his defense have not held up over the years

I'd proffer that most of the teams in the league are playing some form of musical chairs, not playing guys "in their strongest positions" in order to get bats in the lineup, extend careers, or strike a balance of lesser evils. 

Monty started 3 games at SS this spring. It seems like the team has a couple of options they're deciding between in Amaya (glove-first) or Meidroth (OBP). You don't have to start a Gold Glove winner at each position. You can start a slightly above average glove at SS and still be ahead of the game.

Meidroth will not be slightly above big league SS average without an arm and range.

There's already dribblers getting between him and Drury.

This will just end up putting more pressure on a pitching staff not designed to be as strong individually as Crochet or even Fedde last season.

The bullpen MIGHT be better?   That's the best that one can assert at this point.
