I have done to the comparison to other franchises in other posts, but the 2nd team in LA just sold for over double what the White Sox are being sold for. Look at the price paid for San Diego too. If you do this right, the Sox could be a $5 billion franchise in no time at all.

and rightfully so

Out of curiosity I did a google search on costs for a White Sox game compared to MLB. This is a quick search and by no means did I do any extensive research. This could be JR propaganda for all I know)

AI Overview

Attending a Chicago White Sox game is one of the

least expensive experiences in Major League Baseball.

Ticket and Total Costs

  • Average/Low Ticket Prices: A recent study ranked the

Chicago White Sox as having some of the lowest average and minimum ticket prices in the league, with individual get-in prices often starting under $10.

  • Family/Group Cost: A complete ballpark experience for a family of four (including four cheap tickets, parking, two beers, two sodas, and four hot dogs) totals around $118 to $255 depending on the specific metrics used.

  • Comparison to MLB Average: The overall cost for a White Sox game sits significantly below the general MLB average, which often exceeds $300 for a family outing.

Comparison to Cross-Town Rivals

  • Chicago Cubs: Going to a game at Wrigley Field is dramatically more expensive. Cubs family packages and median ticket costs frequently run more than double the price of a White Sox game.

  • League Leaders: Premium teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers or New York Yankees charge baseline ticket and concession prices that can be three times higher than what you pay on the South Side.

Lots of people not realizing how affordable his brother has made things at Suns games

I forgot Mat spearheaded those changes. The Suns’ $2 menu is incredible. I’m hoping $5 Tuesdays are kept, but if Justin is as generous as Mat, concessions may actually get cheaper.

An infrastructure plan is sooooooo much easier to sell than one giving 9 to 10 figures to a billionaire.

I wager this ends with Amtrak “conceding” to conduct and publish an environmental study, the anti-Amtrak movement tapering off, and all plans moving forward as scheduled. It’s not like they’d have to, but Amtrak conducting that study seems to be the critical piece that would kill any momentum against them.

Someone posted a picture of the Suns concessions prices a few months back.

From movies and TV shows, I thought politicians only protest in order to get a bribe?

Mike Quigley is a Cub & Packer fan and was saying the subcommittees he is on a could delay Amtrak. Then the city could deny permits, blah, blah, blah.

I hope so. The local backlash might be why they chose this time to release the ballpark renderings.

Several of the politicians speaking out against this are running for Mayor. If one of them wins, they could put a stop to any infrastructure funding needed to redevelop the Amtrak site.

Team success and related ticket demand are definitely a huge part of the story here. But not the only part—there is a spectrum of possible approaches to this project ranging from valuing affordability and family accessibility to assure the long-term success of the team on one side, to extracting every possible cent from each attending fan on the other. I wouldn’t be too quick to totally dismiss affordability and accessibility as valid concerns. I hope those leading the charge don’t, even if I’m pessimistic that they will.

I would just like those advancing affordability and family accessibility as valid concerns to also have raised the success of 2024 in achieving those goals.

Depends on internal surveys about how elastic the local market is…or how easily could downtown shopping tourist groups from Indiana/Iowa be converted/rerouted from Wrigleyville

Crazy that an NBA team’s concession prices could be cheaper than freaking McDonald’s. I can’t see how anyone couldn’t at least admit this is an awesome move by an owner.

"If there’s evidence that lower concession prices could lead to more people buying concessions or more people attending games it could incentivize people teams to go along with it. The whole reason teams like the Suns and Falcons are trying this is not to lose money or just because they’re generous. They want to make money. Concessions and the entire game day experience may have passed the balking point for some people and families. This may or may not bring people back."

Have there been any sports marketing studies of the Suns and Falcons concessions pricing strategies done yet?

  • Core business impact: Concessions make up a very small fraction of an NBA team's overall income, which relies heavily on media rights, national TV deals, sponsorships, and ticket sales. [1]

Why They Do It

  • Fan goodwill: Selling basic items near cost is treated as a community investment and marketing strategy to improve the overall live experience. [1, 2]

  • Indirect gains: Affordable food helps drive higher overall attendance, boosts merchandise sales, and makes season-ticket packages more attractive

It's a little bit like the Las Vegas theory.

Give folks cheaper but quite nice hotel rooms and steak/lobster for $8.99 and they will remember that just as much as losing $1500 at the tables.

The opposite is true too for those really outrageous concessions prices for things like a soda, soggy helmet nachos and a so so stale burger.

I saw an interview with Josh Nelson of Sox Machine. He claims that if the present Amtrack railyard is not moved the South Loop Stadium is dead. If that happens what would the new owner do. Look for another stadium site, stay at the Rate or move the team out of state?
