Ishbia taking control by 2029?

Interesting that Greenberg thinks the most likely outcome is for Ishbia to keep the Sox at their current location and develop the area around the stadium… But even if they stay at the current location, I cannot imagine that a new owner would pay $2B for the franchise only to keep the current arrangement of acres of parking lots around the current park without much else to do.

It would be a huge plus if there were more restaurant and bar options within walking distance of the stadium. I been doing a baseball stadium trip with friends for years, and options around the park are always a bonus.

Here's some good news for all those Sox fans out there who are Ishbia haters:

"A pair of Phoenix Suns minority owners who were holdovers from the previous regime under former owner Robert Sarver are suing the team..."

Except it's more about previous ownership and the right to access private vs. public information...

I enjoyed this tweet from the guy. "We were expected to be good and completely fucking floundered...now everyone thinks we're bad and thus we're going to be good".

I dunno if the brothers are the same way in this regard, I'd only note that the grass is not always greener. None of these buffoons should 'own' a baseball team.

Meh over some holdover minority owners. Who cares? Sox already got ahead of this issue anyway by Ishbia buying out the minority owners first.

I'd like the farm and front-office prioritized re spending.

I don't think that the major league payroll has been the real problem.

A poor farm system for most of the last 55 years (maybe before, but 55 is all I know) has been the problem.

Yeah, that's some crazy logic in that tweet.

As far as the grass isn't always greener, that's true, but have you seen the lawn that Uncle Jerry has given Sox fandom over the last 3 years?

JR is not going to allow any spending with an unsettled labor situation to start with over and above his distaste for spending in general.

I agree, which is why it’s strange that a few media members think they will spend some money

They WILL spend some money but it won't be on any real solid free agents who can cause much needed improvements.

It'll be more retreads, has-been's, injury prone guys and stiffs. Roster fillers, nothing more...nothing less.

Scrap heap, over the hill, great potentials who never made it, scandalous, has beens, other teams rejects, risky in some way or another.  Its the CWS way. Every now and then, knitting this type of group together gets a competitive team, but nothing enduring.

However this season has seen our minor leagues supply us with a group of rookies who have made for a fun summer here in town, I never thought hoping for 63 wins would be cause to celebrate. Thats how far we have sunk. Somehow though this team has a feel good about it.

$10m + Robert's $20m would imply $30m spending. Who would we spend it on? Overpay Schwarber, Pete Alonso, Cody Bellinger maybe. Kyle Tucker, Framber Valdez, Ranger Suarez seem like the only desirable big ticket free agents available. Not sure the 30+ pitchers are helpful in 2026.

Tucker would be a big get but why would he sign here? Would we just distribute the money between a bunch of guys like Cedric Mullins, Ryan O'Hearn, Josh Naylor, Nestor Cortes? Seems like a losing strategy. Cheap and risky + the system is the actual strategy. Spending just to spend is how you end up with Benintendi. I'm curious, which free agents would you guys pursue?

There are some actual good free agents in 2027 and 2028 that might be fill holes on the team, get back to me a in a year.

Also, who is "White Sox Dave"? The barstool bozo right?

I'm not sure why people actually expect JR to suddenly spend more money in 2026 ahead of a possible strike/lockout.

It should be clear to all that the money Ishbia is putting into this franchise this year and next is not going to free agents.  They've said it's to pay down debts and support organizational operations, not to go on a payroll spending spree.

To be honest, I'm not all that worked up about this.  It's not like the Sox are going to suddenly go out and sign Kyle Tucker to some massive contract as long as JR is the owner.   The Sox are still by far the 2nd worst team in MLB this year, there's a lot of things they need to fix organizationally before I'm going to lose sleep over the 2026 MLB payroll numbers.  I'd rather the next owners put money into getting this organization turned around long term than handing out huge contracts in the short term.

No, I'd rather not get back to you in a year. The Sox have the 2nd lowest payroll in baseball, and if they shed Robert they'll have the lowest. That's disgusting.

Every single player you named would be an upgrade for this team.

STOP LEGITIMIZING AND JUSTIFYING BEING THE CHEAPEST ORGANIZATION IN SPORTS. These aren't your dollars. Jerry became a fucking billionaire on the back of your support.

It's not at all surprising.   They probably still didn't make much this year.

I hate Jerry as an owner as much as anyone, but I suspect many fans still think he's raking in huge profits on this team thanks to the sweetheart stadium lease and all the parking lot fees he collects.   The economics of baseball has changed such that these don't translate into huge profits anymore, especially with the collapse of the RSN money stream teams have been relying on for a few decades now.
