The stuff about "being gay" is quite vague and was probably not all that important to the people at the time. Baseball might be "social conservative" compared to other sports, and so am I, but that idea of 'social conservatism' has a very toxic legacy within the sport. The funny thing is that the WNBA and MLB are on completely opposite ends of the spectrum here and yet neither sport can figure out a way to appeal to the mainstream like NFL and the NBA have managed...to thread the needle and find the reasonable center. I think the WNBA discussion is fairly rightoid logic; so what if many of them are black and gay, you can be black and gay and subscribe to individualistic, nationalistic logic. it's so weird how the WNBA has a bunch of cool players you want to root for, and now it's just some analogy for racial politics. The women can play and the sport is entertaining. Some of these athletes make it "political" and I only think it's worth commentating on when they seem to be contradicting their own values.
