Wait I thought "something" was better than "nothing" and now people are complaining about it?

Tauchman asked not to be traded. Has a daughter going through medical issues and his family is all lives in Illinois. Support network to help them out.

  • You can sign Houser to that deal in 4 months if you want. You absolutely take the 40 grade prospect.

The article cites spotty StatCast metrics but his xERA is 3.95 or right around the middle of the pack due to strong barrel and ground ball rates.  There are reasons to believe he can be a valuable SP moving forward, even if the the 2ish ERA is far from sustainable.  A weak SP market would definitely help his value though.

Could we get Alcantara from the Cubs for Houser?

He's obviously blocked in CF there.

No way…you need to go down multiple tiers when it comes to Houser.  I’d target someone like Eli Lovich who is very young and has interesting corner OF tools but hasn’t come close to putting things together yet.  He’s the type of prospect with some ceiling who might be gettable for Houser.

BTV has Alcanatara SV at about 11.

Houser at 5.

Shouldn't be hard to do if we can throw in something else that might be helpful like Tauchman as platoon corner (4m SV) or a reliever or something assuming they are willing to move the player.

The prices for high end pitching will be enormous and it seems they need more than one pitcher.

The Cubs have quite a few interesting very young Latin signings from the past few years which would fit the Sox timeline

Is Houser more valuable than Fedde last year? Would it be safe to assume it would be a similar return?

Way less, as Fedde had the extra year on his deal

Less.  Housers advanced stats are worse, there is no extra control,  and even less history.

Less for sure

Houser is certainly worth less than Fedde, but maybe Gety won't be completely bamboozled this time around...

I don’t think the Sox are gonna get him, but I believe Alcantara is for sure gonna get dealt. His expiration date is rushing towards us. He’s always been mostly young and toolsy with production TBD. He has not really had any period of great production. I bet the Cubs cash him in.

Idk, I feel like the Fedde trade looks fine at this point. I'd much rather have Vargas/Albertus/Perez than Fedde and Kopech at this juncture.

The real question is could we have done better, either separately,  or as a package.

Sure. Fair to question. Deal always felt a player light at the time considering how well Fedde was pitching. But it's obvious the league didn't value Fedde like Soxtalk did, and less than a year later we can see why. But all things considered, deal looks fine for Sox at this point. Far from a bamboozling.

No T100 prospects were traded last year but maybe you can get one that fell off a year or two prior for Robert.

The premise of keeping Fedde and/or Kopech is absurd.  This is a franchise in asset accumulation mode.  There is no world in which they are kept.

Definitely felt a piece light at the time of the deal, but honestly it feels decent with the benefit of hindsight.  Will be interesting to see how Albertus does as he’s almost a bonus at this point.

Counsell could use Houser as a spot starter and also out of the pen, it's a no brainer.

Matt Karchner 2.0 please :)

? I didn't say anything about keeping them.

Miguel Vargas as the headliner was always dumb for where the roster is.

the move to make here is another Vargas type move... Marlins really followed that with Stowers, who is a guy that had multiple MLB chances but hadnt done anythng with it. Now he's an All-Star. Hopefully we can talk to someone with a stacked farm system who has people blocked, and we can evaluate traits over performance.

I say this because people are not trading bats, or teenagers. Caissie for Houser is unrealistic pipe dream. Same with Alcantara. Same with Shaw.

How is it better with hindsight?  Vargas has been largely disappointing as the front man.  Albertus has barely played in a year.  Perez was a beast for a month and has been mediocre since.

Ideally he'd go as part of a package but you'd need to find a team needing Robert and a decent back end starter.

The thing I don’t like about Vientos as well is I don’t want them to get too right handed again
