Yep.

I think most fans already knew and expected this especially with labor uncertainty on the horizon. JR won't take risks in the best of times, with the 2027 season in some jeopardy he won't do a damn thing.

Greenberg made a good point that by delaying the sale it would be JR in line for any bad PR from the players, fans and media if there is a strike/lockout over the new CBA.  Ishbia can then come in with a clean slate as the new owner.

That all might be true...but do you think they really delay a sale of this magnitude due to PR reasons?  I mean...maybe...but does that mean they sat there in the discussions and said "hey Jerry, why don't you hang on to the White Sox a bit longer so the Ishbias can look better"?

The sale can't happen until 2029, so it is already built in.

No, I don't think that was the reason for the delay but it's just one of the interesting points Greenberg brought up.

They trade Sosa and they're really lacking in power other than the Montgomery's and Teel.

Meidroth has to at least be a 700-725ish hitter or he's not really helping that much.

.649 is just not going to get it done.

How soon until Getz claims one or both of these guys?

“Rays designated OF Kameron Misner and 1B Bob Seymour for assignment.“

Seymour got a lot of catcalls around here a while back. Big power.

Yep, I do remember that.  Good minor league numbers for both of them, but especially Seymour.  I really wouldn’t be surprised if Getz claims one or both of these guys, both being “relatively” young at 27.

Rays decided to not pay Fairbanks $11M. Seems short-sighted.

Definitely, but $11 million for a closer for the Rays is a large chunk of their payroll — like 14% of it going by their 2025 opening day payroll.  And I wouldn’t be surprised if they “manufacture” a cheap new closer next season out of thin air.

Ironically but related, they just claimed backup RF Jake Fraley from the Braves who is due an estimated $3.6 million via salary arbitration, which was one of the reasons they DFA’ed Misner and Seymour.  Won’t pay $11 million for a pretty damn good closer but will pay $3.6 million for a backup corner outfielder.  Can’t spend a dollar if you only have fifty cents, I guess.  Sounds familiar.

https://fansided.com/mlb/mlb-22-million-question-tracking-every-qualifying-offer-mistake

"While Tampa Bay valued Fairbanks, its payroll going into the 2026 season is unlikely to climb, and the Rays chose to pay the $1 million buyout on the deal rather than devote a significant portion of its payroll to a relief pitcher with a strong relief corps returning.

Fairbanks' best full season came in 2023, when he struck out 13.5 batters per nine innings and had greater than an 11-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. With questions about his durability present after never throwing more than 45.1 innings in a season, Fairbanks booked a career-best 60.1 innings in 2025 and logged a career-high 27 saves."   espn.com

Age and durability/staying concerns with Fairbanks...

After the top reliever on the market, right-hander Edwin Diaz (qo), Fairbanks slots in strongly in the second tier, with right-handers Devin Williams (no qo), Robert Suarez (no qo), Ryan Helsley and Tyler Rogers. Others with multiple years of closing experience include left-hander Taylor Rogers and right-handers Kyle Finnegan, Raisel Iglesias, Emilio Pagan, Kenley Jansen and David Robertson. Relievers expected to draw interest from teams include right-handers Brad Keller and Luke Weaver, plus left-handers Steven Matz and Caleb Ferguson.

I’d only do it if it means they brought in an every day 1B. As of right now, there’s still at bats available since Vargas and Sosa can play 1B. Kinda think they might as well give Sosa an OF glove though. Feels like the odd man out.

Sosa in RF.

Yikes.

Bad enough on the infield.

Just not a dynamic, fast-twitch athlete.

Benintendi has to play LF passably if you want to have any hope of getting back at least 1/3rd of his contract in a dump at some point (looking less and less likely as teams just wait for him to be waived/released).
