Johno
to win the division if we were to sign Tucker, Alonso and Valdez this offseason ? I know this will NEVER happen, but I honestly think we instantly become the favorites if White Sox ownership decided to do this.
WBWSF
I don't know if we would be the favorites but it would be a much better team and we would have something to look forward to.

Detroit still.. unless they trade away Skubal for lower level guys and Max Clark/McGonigle both fail. The White Sox attempted to do this with Cabrera Robertson and LaRoche...to jump start things. But those were all Tier B guys. Tucker isn't even a sure thing to stay healthy as he ages out. Most Cubs' fans aren't even that interested unless the price came down to $325-350 million. caulfield12
If this was the easy solution...Angels would have done the equivalent when they had prime Ohtani and Trout together. Not to mention you'd have to convince the other two players/agents that ALL THREE guys would be coming onboard together...AND pay a 10-15% premium over the big market teams as well for joining a fifth place team outside of the East and West Coast, so impacting outside income opportunities as well. Current trust level with JR??? about zero
kitekrazy
No. Tucker seems to have health issues and they would only get worse here. Let's continue to ignore that no big free agent would ever consider coming here.

They are not one player away from a division title. 1
joejoesox
hell no, we have no bullpen or starting rotation and the lineup is a massive question mark with potential sophomore slumps they could win 70 if everything turned out right with those signings, but they arent winning the division

In fairness, he listed 3 players (that the Sox will not sign). And honestly I think that would put them squarely in the competitive bracket, not World Series but possibly wildcard or even division if everything went right.

Sorry you just made me seriously laugh out loud with the concept that this owner will sign 3 free agents like that!

There still is not nearly enough pitching on the front line, and end of the bullpen.

I still have my doubts that these 3 players would be enough to take a team from 102 losses to a division title. Perhaps it's more likely in the AL Central than in other divisions, but the Sox still have too many holes and lack enough organizational depth to become division champs next year even if they signed those players. TBH, other than Tucker, I wouldn't want them to sign players over age 30 to high-priced contracts right now - especially given JR's budgets - as there's a good chance they'll be washed up by the time the Sox can field a team around them that can make a deep playoff run.

My response to his question had a huge caveat, -if everything goes right-. Which rarely happens for most teams

You're assuming they would play at elite levels with no injuries AND the rest of the team continues to develop with good health.
chitownsportsfan
Gets us to probably a projected 78 or so wins, which you could have a fluke and get to 88 some years. It would be awesome as a fan to have that budget but this is just fantasy. We're a poverty franchise for now.

As would the Twins at much higher payroll and debt numbers, a recent 2023 playoff win over the Yankees and a decent relatively-new outdoor stadium that's not nearly the home field advantage the old HHH Metrodome used to be. Sinking local RSN revenues as well. They really have no choice but to max out their farm by trading Buxton when/if he waives his no trade clause. Another team that suffered during Covid financially and didn't bounce back, especially with Correa under performing badly and soaking up all kinds of payroll space. Pohlad and JR are near Romulus and Remus as owners, born w/ the same spendthrift ways and stubborn streaks to boot. I can probably count the number of teams who bring in less money than the White Sox on one hand. Poor attendance, poor TV ratings, poor RSN situation, no additional revenue streams around the ballpark except for parking fees. I'm not sure where the Sox stand as far as corporate sponsorship goes, but I'd expect them to be pretty low on the list among MLB teams.
