Thanks! Well I’m not a beat reporter or Jeff Passan. Just a fan. I hadn’t seen anyone in the Sox community write about Okamoto and thought people would be interested.

  • Good for them. Probably the least surprising signing this off-season.

Honestly though, Getz told everyone that Naylor is not the type of FA they are going after right now.  Full stop.  They aren’t spending that money and they aren’t wasting their time offering lesser contracts so they can be told no.  There was no table, they aren’t in the restaurant.

I've read where the White Sox  are interested in signing some hitter from Japan. They think it will cost $64 million/4  years to sign him.

What are the $ amounts for the deal?  I've only read that they've agreed to a 5-year contract.

His physical is today, so I imagine the numbers will be out soon.

I've read it surmised between $90M-$100M.

I don’t think we really know that.  Free agency started on November 1st.  Teams could have offered Naylor a deal and Seattle just matched.

I don’t know if I have ever seen a deadline acquisition fit and thrive as well as Naylor did in Seattle. Unless the M’s were stupid and lowballing, I don’t think anyone else really had a shot.

Wouldn’t count on that either

We will have our seat reserved for all the kiddie tables.  We do not make reservations for adult tables.

Not with this ownership that's for sure.

4 years is right on the edge of where this team might actually be competitive again,  so unless a deal is a steal, it seems weird to waste those first couple/few years at that high of a salary for a team having a cash crunch.

Please link to the source on this since Getz has already said the only contracts they'll be giving out are one year deals (due to the upcoming lockout)

I think one of the free agent predictions lists by MLBTR or somebody had one writer of four pick the Sox for Okamoto.

To be fair, he did walk that back and say they're willing to go multiple years if it's the right fit and all that, but that probably maxes out at 2 years given what we're expecting them to spend.

Sports Mockery, Chicago White Sox. The player is Kazuma Okamoto.

Forgive me for not being impressed with the source.

I'm willing to wager whomever this player is, he is not coming to the White Sox.

He posts here so you can ask him for forgiveness directly

I will when this player signs with the Sox.

It's been what 20 years since Iguchi? The Sox haven't even tried to get into the Pacific rim baseball market since then. I seriously doubt they are going to start that now.

They have been making public statements about their interest in getting back into the Asian market, as soon as this off-season.

ChiSoxFanMike’s article below cites Yahoo Sports Japan’s reporting that “White Sox scouts were in attendance for a recent Japan vs. Korea exhibition game featuring star Japanese free agent infielder Kazuma Okamoto at the Tokyo Dome.”

This contract is the Benintendi special. I'm surprised so many people are interested in him.

This is a more interesting proposition to me. The guy is an OBP machine with plus power. I think he transitions to MLB better than Murakami; a lot less swing and miss in his game.

Okamoto turns 30 in June.  I doubt the Sox are all that interested.  Murakami is only 25 but the Sox aren’t going to meet his price.  I also read that Murakami has struggled mightily hitting fastballs above 93 MPH.  That’s pretty scary.

I was expecting 4/$80-90M, so 5/$92M feels like a bargain.
