Per Passan: White Sox sign Munetaka Murakami 2 years 34M

Shouldn't Schwarber be used as the example for Mune? IMO, they are incredibly similar.

As a hitter yes, so far he's Schwarber with a higher walk rate.

Contractually no, since Schwarber got his big deal at age 33 and Mune will reach free agency at 28. (And his prior contract was after only 1 year of his now typical production)

  • He’s not much more expensive than O’Hearn would have been with an incredible amount more of upside and flip potential.  There is no downside to this deal, as let’s be honest, they’ve wasted 17 mil a y

This is what I have such a hard time understanding. How was Ishbia ok with buying into this situation of another 8 years of JR continuing to add nails to the coffin. It seems the longer JR is in charge the more money it will cost to bring this franchise back to relevance.

Agreed. It must be maddening to Ishbia if he has to sit back and watch this franchise being driven further into the ground and lose more of the next generation of Chicago fans as good players continue to be traded away as soon as they get close to a big payday.

JR could hold on to this team for up to another 8 years. That hole to climb out of to gain back market share in Chicago is going to be a lot deeper in 2034.

Problem 2: The balls put into play aren't turning into hits at their former levels. The statistical term for this is BABIP and the .289 mark this season would be the lowest since 1992, though, like average, it will go up some over the course of the season. But it isn't going to approach the "healthy" benchmark of .300. I had hoped that the ban of extreme defensive shifting would get us back to that level. It simply has not happened.

The bane of a league with a batting average of too much three-true-outcomes baseball -- far too many plate appearances that end with a strikeout, walk or home run.

Most national attention for a Sox since...?

If Mune has 23 HR and 57 RBI at the trade deadline……

They wont trade him until it appears they have to which would be trade deadline next year and he has refused to sign an extension no matter what the offer is.

No idea if there will be an offer worthy especially without Ishbia's help. The only way JR resigns him is if he's attracting a lot of sponsorship deals and could bring in close to what the contract offer is. Not sure how likely that is since we aren't privy to financial info. We also arent entirely sure how open to being resigned Mune is or his feelings about how he fits in here with his young teammates.

The length of his 2 year contract with the Sox was his idea since he wasnt getting huge offers just so he'd have time to adjust to the league and still enter free agency relatively young and still able to attract big offers.

It would also help for the Sox to keep winning and generate some excitement and get big crowds and have Japanese style ways of cheering like hitting those inflatable clappers together like they did in Anaheim when they had Ohtani. People need to be supportive now if they want to have any chance at all of retaining him. It may only end in more disappointment but you never know until you try.

He will leave Chicago for sure his feelings will be so hurt!

Colson notably didn't hit any until 14 games in, so his first 10 were actually in an 18 game stretch

Two scary guys at the plate

Bonura was Cuban? Maybe misremembering.

This couldn’t be going a better and it’s a lot of fun to watch.

4 times in a row and 6 times total, 25 games into the season.

Judge and Stanton are at 55 times (not counting playoffs) since 2018. Keep at this pace and Mune/Montgomery can catch up in two seasons or so

Also saw this after the first Dbacks game:

The 4th time would have netted $20m+ but also probably sent some guys in black suits to your door lol

I wonder if anyone else ever got to 10 career homers before he hit a double. It's been incredible.

10 is the record which Mune tied tonight, 11 would set a new high.

Dae-ho Lee hit his 9th and 10th homers on 6/10 and his first double on 6/16 for the Mariners in 2016. Also hit his 3rd and 4th homers on the same day (5/4), so two 2 HR games before your first double might stand for a while unless Mune Mania gets even wilder somehow.

Certainly won't complain if it does.

He had 5 doubles to go with 4 homers in his first MLB stint.

Make Murakami and Montgomery the faces of the franchise. The marketing and attendance alone will pay for the contract once this team gets good (they're already exciting).

Be the face of Chicago and not another star signing somewhere else. Let's build something.

If he leaves, it will be 100% Jerry Reinsdorf's fault

Market it as M&M. We can even do a promo for a yellow winter jacket in July

Double play short-hand could be M2M2M.
