Hopefully he'll keep settling in and make it a tough decision to keep him or not. If you know you arent going to make the playoffs picking up free pitching talent that automatically slots into your top 15 or so prospects might be a risk worth taking with him and Alberto. Its like getting 2 decent pitching prospects in a trade but you have to burn the 1st service year right away. I saw people discussing if Paez could be the PTBNL in the Hicks trade if the Sox like him but don’t want to keep him on the MLB roster. I’m not sure how that works though since he’s a Rule 5 guy. This was discussed on this weeks' FutureSox Sunday night podcast, where a team like the Nationals are desperate enough to grab and hide Paez.

William is looking sharp. His time is coming up pretty quickly. I hope we keep both Rule guys; I assume we will use Paez as one of those "players to be named" in a lingering Boston trade. If I had my druthers, they would DFA Beni and Hicks....they are clogging.

Of the two Rule 5 guys, I think they have a better chance of shielding Alberto since he’s a hard thrower and a pure reliever. They can just hide him in garbage time until he proves himself. If they can find a way to keep Paez as well and develop him in the minors, that would be nice. Edited 5 hours ago by ChiSoxFanMike

He would be retuned to the Red Sox if he doesn’t make the team and then you figure he can be the PTBNL that our Sox select and come back to us. Not a lot of teams with MLB innings available to stash a guy who hasn't even pitched in AA. The Rockies seem like a particularly bad welcome to the majors for a young arm skipping levels, and Washington just signed Littell which makes them a less likely fit...who else would have the BP roster spot to spare?
