Murakami nickname thread. Dubbed the "South Side Samurai". Will it stick?

Featured Replies

The only thing cornier than this nickname is the "Whoa!!" right after it in the video. Impressive amount of cringe.

Will it stick? I even think the "Cuban Pimp" nickname for Viciedo was better.

@ChiliIrishHammock24 , come in here and give this man a nickname. It's completely shameful that you refuse to give nicknames anymore. You were the king of nicknames.

The Oriental Express perhaps?

Murakami has famously had zero hits since Schriff dropped the nickname on him. Cringe, like ...

Of course Schriff came up with that shitty nickname.

I've never heard of it being a racist term. Hell, Hawk said it frequently and never got punished for it.

It ostensibly just means "rising" or "daybreak" or more relevantly "east" in Latin, but the term isn't in use anymore and it bothers people. "Oriental studies" isn't a department at universities anymore. Chicago's "Oriental Theatre" is now called the "Nederlander Theatre". You're probably not saying "colored people" or "negro" anymore, right? They're not specifically racial slurs, but you'd look like an asshole if you said it. Times change. And it's not specifically a new idea either, Edward Said wrote that book in 1978.

100%

Lessons should have been learned during all the years since Don Drysdale said ""Go get 'em, Dago!" when LaRussa came out of the dugout to argue with an umpire. Fast forward to 2026, the best policy one should maintain, especially if one is a public figure, is to assiduously avoid even the appearance of bigotry or intolerance of others... like Said said.

It could have been so simple, “Mune” can incorporate moon shots if you want, or just leave it at that. It works without needing to come up with south side samurai

In recent years, the term "Samurai" has been appropriated by certain groups, particularly in online communities, to refer to individuals who exhibit toxic masculinity and a disregard for the feelings and well-being of others. This usage of the term is highly offensive and disrespectful to the true meaning of the word.

In conclusion, while the term "Samurai" has a rich history and cultural significance in Japan, its modern usage as slang can be problematic and offensive. It is important to understand the context in which it is being used and to avoid using it in a way that perpetuates harmful stereotypes or promotes toxic behavior.

I never knew this. Thanks for sharing, tray.

Make no mistake, I can obviously see how this is offensive and wouldn’t fly today. But I’ll be honest, I am part Italian and I would laugh my ass off if I heard this these days. I am also picturing TLR running to home plate like this as Drysdale says it…

My dad is the Italian side of my family and I am going to ask him about Drysdale saying this to see if he remembers. Either way, I know he’ll laugh about it as well.

lol to be honest I think there might be more people mad about TLR being made fun of for being old when he ran out there in your clip, than people were mad about the Dago comment 😂

Agreed. He could have just called his homers “Mune Shots”, rather than coming up with this lame nickname — “And that’s another Mune Shot for Murakami!” It would definitely be wittier than a played out Japanese reference.

Obviously, it is a legitimate historical reference to Japan but it’s just too much of a stereotype these days. It would be like if we had a Chinese player named Kim and Schriffen called him “Kung Fu Kim”. It’s a bit in poor taste to overgeneralize one historical fact and apply it to anyone of that ethnicity, as if it’s all they are known for. It’s definitely a pretty cringeworthy nickname and I would hope Schriffen checked with Murakami through his translator to see if he was okay with it at the very least.

Lol I imagine it would be like if an American went to play in Japan and they called him "The Kyoto Cowboy"

I don't think its necessarily offensive, but its definitely corny.

It's 2026, we should understand cultural sensitivities and differences to the extent where we can do better than nativistic stereotypes. Even if it isn't "offensive", it isn't good either. Be better John.

I think Murakami-sama is the coolest.

The Japanese baseball team are literally called the Samurai.

Cool. Let them do it. I am OK with us not having to resort to lowest common denominator stereotypes. We can do better. There is no shame in that.

He said on the broadcast (paraphrasing) "I ran a few options by Mune to see what he likes best."

That said it is pretty cringe IMO. Plus, he already told us what he wants to be called:
