10 hours ago10 hr Now that the team is competitive and cutting/DFAing guys is beginning to hurt, it got me thinking. Several relievers that people like in the minors aren't on the 40 man roster. To get someone on, someone has to go. One way to get extra 40 man spots is via the 60 day dl as those on the 60 day don't count towards the 40. They do have to be added back at the end of the year as you go through the offseason. Prospects meeting years in the minors parameters also must be added or are exposed to the rule 5 draft. The WS currently have 8 players on the 60 day dl with only Hayes becoming a free agent. The impending roster crunch that could cause at year end or as they return from rehab may make things a lot more interesting at the trade deadline. Some prospects may get moved just because of the now much tighter 40 man.
3 hours ago3 hr Author Well that was quick. Peoples for Hartl is exactly the kind of move I was talking about. Seems like we got a worse prospect but a year or two away from 40 man. I don’t get why Peoples never got a chance but it is what it is at this point.

3 hours ago3 hr Author Drafted at age 18 and signed before Oct birthday in 2024. Think that gets you five years so after 2028. Draft year counts as first. That’s just to be on 40 man. If he is not in majors by 2028 something has happened/gone wrong.
1 hour ago1 hr In a similar vein, the Sox have 5 lefty relievers on the 26 man: Shweitzer, Eisert, Hudson, Newcomb, Murphy. I presume that that number will have to be winnowed down; and some can’t just be optioned back; and none are really bad enough to just DFA of the 40-man. (except maybe Eisert who has such little velocity), so dealing with this situation might create 40-man room.
