Upcoming Roster Crunch

Featured Replies

Now that the team is competitive and cutting/DFAing guys is beginning to hurt, it got me thinking. Several relievers that people like in the minors aren't on the 40 man roster. To get someone on, someone has to go. One way to get extra 40 man spots is via the 60 day dl as those on the 60 day don't count towards the 40. They do have to be added back at the end of the year as you go through the offseason. Prospects meeting years in the minors parameters also must be added or are exposed to the rule 5 draft. The WS currently have 8 players on the 60 day dl with only Hayes becoming a free agent. The impending roster crunch that could cause at year end or as they return from rehab may make things a lot more interesting at the trade deadline. Some prospects may get moved just because of the now much tighter 40 man.

Well that was quick. Peoples for Hartl is exactly the kind of move I was talking about. Seems like we got a worse prospect but a year or two away from 40 man. I don’t get why Peoples never got a chance but it is what it is at this point.

Doc, how soon do they have to put Bonemar on the 40 man roster?

2019 at earliest I believe, could be wrong and it's 2018 as westeddy posted. either way no rush.

There was a fun moment on the O's broadcast when they were glazing all of our young FRP that panned out (either home grown or via trade) and then realized, oh "and they have #1 overall pick!" .

After the 2028 season.

Drafted at age 18 and signed before Oct birthday in 2024. Think that gets you five years so after 2028. Draft year counts as first. That’s just to be on 40 man. If he is not in majors by 2028 something has happened/gone wrong.

In a similar vein, the Sox have 5 lefty relievers on the 26 man:  Shweitzer, Eisert, Hudson, Newcomb, Murphy. I presume that that number will have to be winnowed down; and some can’t just be optioned back; and none are really bad enough to just DFA of the 40-man. (except maybe Eisert who has such little velocity), so dealing with this situation might create 40-man room.

Schweitzer will be sent down today. Eisert is probably the next reliever on the chopping block. Hudson, Newcomb, & Murphy (if the June version is real) will stick on the 26 man roster.

Here’s an extremely early view of how the 40 man roster could shake out ahead of next year’s Rule 5 draft:

  • Infielders (9): Murakami, Meidroth, C. Montgomery, Vargas, J. Gonzalez, Acuna, Baldwin, Murray, Bergolla*

  • Outfielders (6): Antonacci, Peters, B. Montgomery, Benintendi, Pereira, Perez

  • Catchers (3): Teel, Quero, Romo

  • Starting Pitchers (11): Martin, Burke, Schultz, Kay, S. Smith, McDougal, Sandlin, Thorpe, Bush, H. Smith*, Adams*

  • Relievers (11): Taylor, Dominguez, Hicks, W. Gonzalez, Berroa, Vasil, Hudson, Murphy, Schweitzer, Rock, Palette*

  • Free Agents (5): Newcomb, Fedde, Richards, Grichuk, Hays

  • DFAs (7): Davitt, Cannon, Gilbert, Eisert, Leasure, Davis, Nishada

This assumes we fully load ahead of the Rule 5 when in reality we likely leave a few spots open for free agents. Ignoring that for now, there are 12 total roster exits due to free agency and DFAs. There are four roster additions with Hagen, Mason, & Bergolla being highly probable adds. Palette is the 4th guy I included as I think some RH reliever will be added this season, but could also be Iriarte or Franklin. Those two plus Gowens, Batista, & Carella would be left unprotected.

Looking at our roster “needs”, I’d expect the Sox to add a legit TOR starter in free agency and at least try to bring back Newcomb. Another RH reliever is a possibility. Backup catcher would be another upgrade option, but my guess is they bring in a non roster invite to challenge Quero. Are they comfortable with Everson & Perez filling the Grichuk role? If not, one of them probably goes.

Very possible another three or four guys would have to go and this is when you really start seeing the roster crunch. Obviously this is a good problem to have, but it’s also why you see elite organizations like the Rays dump “fringe” major leaguers for cash like they did with Peters.

Is Schultz any better than Schweitzer?
