Baseball Savant isn't registering that xwoba as statistically significant. Neither is his .200 batting average, right, but more in line with the player that he actually is. An MLB player to be sure, just not a particularly good one.

The problem is you are actually drawing conclusions off a SSS impacted by a ridiculously low .182 BABIP and declaring the player is “not a very good one”.

Half the time he just slots in as a good utility guy. Given the depth in the org it was an OK trade. We just won't know for 3-5 years how it looks.
Tuesday at 11:10 PM3 days I think Gonzalez is a good player. Heck, I wanted to keep him and let him spend most of the time at DH instead of our still negative fWAR guy. I think he'll hit well; probably like Mead. But I don't lament it...I guess because I understood the trade and I don't think there's a huge risk.Speaking of Mead, it's okay with me if we call up the guy we traded him for and let him DH.In the long run, pretty impressive Sox development to turn-around 2 hitters so quickly. 2 hours ago2 hr One thought about the general philosophy around trading a young MLB-ready player for a draft pick/draft slot $. I think executives (rightly) see the ceiling for high schoolers taken in the first ~60 picks to be extremely high. Floor is most often extremely low and that's why they aren't just snatched 1-1. So if you look at Jacob Gonzalez and say even though his ceiling includes being a valuable player, it doesn't include being a star player, that informs your decision to get a pick instead. If you lose a deal like that 4 out of 5 times, but the 1 time you win it's by 10x, then it's a good gamble. Of course if I was a big fan of Gonzo I might want to say that he's a lefty shortstop flashing power so the ceiling might be rather high for him.I had a nice interaction with Jacob at spring training when he was signing autographs (notably, he was a minor leaguer who was often NOT asked for autographs because fans didn't know who he was or perhaps didn't care) so I basically root for him. At the same time, I also root for the White Sox to not make stupid decisions so it won't break my heart if he's an unexceptional player.

1 hour ago1 hr Just now, Chicago White Sox said:What is Jacob Thome’s ceiling?🤷 I would say part of the deal here is that the ceiling for these kids is high in part because we're not even as good at knowing their ceilings. I look at Jacob Thome and I see a kid. I don't know what the man version of him will be like. Might be worse at baseball than the kid version for all I know. And then to be ticky tack about this, I think this question should probably be about Cole Prosek even though we took him with the other pick. He got paid more and I wonder whether the Sox were thinking they might not have the pool money for him if they hadn't gotten Thome under slot at 34. And then you can look at the numerous other over-slot players who may have been chosen in part due to the financial flexibility afforded by the extra pick at #34.
1 hour ago1 hr 4 minutes ago, Chicago White Sox said:What is Jacob Thome’s ceiling?Absolute best case? Probably like a LH version of Vargas. Middle case? Probably a backup utility guy. Half the time he never makes MLB, floor with any HS guy is obviously just org filler. Like Vargas as a prospect, he needs to add weight and get more athletic.

They had to get that pick because the Yankees were rumored to want him at 35. They wanted him AND his discount they already knew he'd give.
