Just watched the Sox Machine podcast on the deal. Fegen said his White Sox sources told him they zeroed in on Castillo because "He's controllable, he has a vested option through 2028."

Take it for what it's worth. In 2028 by the way Castillo will be 35 years old.

He struck out 3, walked two, and gave up 2 HR’s in 7 innings. He must have induced some weak contact outside of the two bombs as the xERA was really good, but that is ugly from a FIP perspective.

The lack of strikeouts is what concerns me. Hopefully there is a fix for that because he’s going to struggle if it sticks around 6 per 9 like it has the last two months.

Do they realize "controllable" is a bad thing if youre not worth the money on the contract? He needs to perform like an ace to be worth that price.

Incorrect. That's Merrill Kelly money. Starters cost so much money on the open market. I'm not saying Castillo is some big surplus value, but a short term FA deal for a starter will cost a ton for a guy who will not excite you much.

I don't think that is true anymore. He has the 29th highest AAV for starters, after this off-season he will be closer to 40

People are panicking over Boston Smith meanwhile the dodgers get this weird world where we act like river Ryan at 45 years old is still a prospect in trading for an actual impact starter. Some weird collusion in baseball that we play along to dodgers prospects being good.

Another item from the Sox Machine podcast tonight. Fegen said Sox sources have told him they are NOT calling up either Smith or McDougal.

Looking for bullpen help with Dominquez gone and of course catching. Teel still working out with his ankle in a walking boot which Fegen said "tells you how far he is from being ready."

The more I stew on this, the more I think this is the “big” pitching move. Not sure we add another arm at this point. More or less expecting something like this moving forward:

Hagen and McDougal pitched tonight, so they wouldn't get called up yet anyway. For the moment, I think Hagen is more likely to be successful in MLB out of the pen but I also think Sox are in less need of a lefty reliever. Especially if they are thinking of keeping Noah in some kind of swing role.

Yeah TBH, this team is so young and it's so unclear what you're going to get from people that I just don't know if it makes sense to go out and try to get a bunch of upgrades. Keep the ear to the ground for bullpen depth and pick up a MLB catcher, then roll with your guys. Also, call Houston's GM and see if they'll take Bonemer + Carlson + Noah + anything for Yordan.

I like this deal tbh. Shocked at how many hated it. Wonder if this and Skubal means that Milwaukee ends up with Peralta.

he's fine. i think he has some juice left and the piggyback thing was dumb. that said, his metrics and age and contract are all middling. middling add, I guess taking on this for seranthony is good but yea, middling.

Boston Smith was essentially the "JR cost" of sending Dominguez out.
