It’s also worth noting that they didn’t need to be here. Detroit severely lowballed him during discussions about a long-term extension. And this offseason, it only offered him $19 million in arbitration, which was, frankly, insulting. In the end, Skubal won his arbitration case for a record $32 million. There was no coming back. They should have traded him at that point instead of waiting for the deadline and taking a smaller return. The franchise put itself in this position by not locking up its star player and accepted a package that is below his market value."https://www.si.com/mlb/tarik-skubal-trade-grades-how-tigers-dodgers-did-in-deal-for-cy-young-winner Edited 7 hours ago7 hr by caulfield12
7 hours ago7 hr They do think that he can stick in CFA (for now)...but there's a considerable difference of opinion about how true that will be down the line as he fills out.At the very least, adding Max Clark and Greene into the mix make for a very nice outfield trio. Now the big question shifts to whether the Tigers will eventually have enough pitching if you also trade Mize?https://www.espn.com.sg/mlb/story/_/id/49469642/mlb-trade-deadline-grades-2026-tarik-skubal-los-angeles-dodgers-detroit-tigers-blockbusterA=DodgersD=TigersF=the rest of baseball fans Edited 7 hours ago7 hr by caulfield12
6 hours ago6 hr None of the prospects the Dodgers gave up was viewed as crucial to the team’s future. It was hard to figure out how Hope was going to ever play in Los Angeles—he was considered the third-best outfield prospect on his own Double-A Tulsa team, behind Josue De Paula and Mike Sirota (and Quintero as well). Ryan has shown front-of-the-rotation stuff at his best, but he’s topped 50 innings in a season only once since he was drafted in 2022, and he’ll turn 28 this month. Smith has MLB-quality stuff, but he’s a Class A pitcher who has already missed significant time with an elbow injury. The Tigers got a normal level of return for Skubal, but if Skubal dominates teams in the postseason, it will leave many wondering if would it have been wise for someone else to overpay a bit in prospects to keep the team that has everything from adding one of the best pitchers in baseball?https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/tigers-land-zyhir-hope-river-ryan-brady-smith-in-tarik-skubal-trade/ Edited 6 hours ago6 hr by caulfield12

Not because of the money but because of the lack of prospects. That was the best deal you could get for the best pitcher in baseball???It should’ve been the top 3 prospects not this.It is just for 3 months but a very important 3 months.

And uniformed fans love to say “other owners should just spend like the Dodgers” and have no understanding how the financials of the game work and why the Dodgers have a huge competitive advantage given their regional TV deal (which doesn’t even fully count for CBT purposes due their previous owner getting divorced). It’s a truly unfair system and one that requires a floor & cap like all other major sports to solve. We can all enjoy the Dodgers go for a three peat while their tax bill is higher than half the league’s payrolls as you mentioned.

39 minutes ago39 min Ryan get is sneaky good because you'll never have to pay him, he has very limited innings on his arm since he was a position player, and you're acquiring his best years with basically no development left to do. Edited 39 minutes ago39 min by Look at Ray Ray Run
