Bad expectations.

Bad expectations that just one of the four players he acquired would play better with the Sox than their previous team? Wow…

Literally, no one will say we should have done that.

There's a certain irony to using "don't trust Coors production" against Doyle...and then citing Adell's stats immediately after they've been inflated by playing there. Adell went 6-14 at Coors and is

Chris Getz is bad at this. People mistaken the ability to hire smart people for draft purposes with being good as the sox GM right now. This guy has gotten taken to the woodshed in almost every deal

Oh come on. The Sox even said Castillo was brought in due to his ability to provide innings as a starter, yet 3 of his 4 starts have been short.

4 Starts. Handled Cincy. 2 games - Boston and the Cubs, two very good offenses (Red Sox on a historical tear) - 4 and 4.2 innings. Got clobbered by the Mets. They picked him up as a project. We'll see how the changes they're making take over a few more starts.

Bad expectations is a crazy statement. If we weren't to expect anything, why did they trade for them in the first place?

No, call up Adams and use him in the rotation. Instead, we have a past his prime and expensive “ace” that has pitched one good start out of four.

Experience in a pennant race and subsequent playoffs means something.

Adams would be a project as well, and isn’t nearing retirement.

I said at the time that I don't think these deals really help the team overall much. Maybe raise the floor, not so much the ceiling. Though, I may have been in denial and thought that was best case scenario.

I think Doyle's ceiling is relatively high and his floor is negative WAR and unplayable. If he's a league average hitter and keeps up the defensive work, that's worth 4 WAR (ie his 2024 season). If he can OPS the same .764 he did in Colorado while hitting 20+ bombs, ~115 OPS+ or so, that's an easy all-star. Will he ever reach those numbers again? I dunno, maybe. With Brazoban and Castillo I agree with you though.

He'd better not be. Skubal is almost certainly staying with the Dodgers (unless they can't afford him given their recent money and legal woes), but even if not I doubt the Sox would pay him 50+ mil/yr or whatever he'll get. The second tier has some guys worth considering though, like Michael King (opt out), Jose Berrios, Casey Mize and Shota Imanaga. Then grab a reclamation project or two and I'd feel pretty good.

I will be absolutely stunned if they sign anyone outside the organization for more than 25 mil this offseason

I was just talking to this season specifically. Maybe some offseason work and adjustment helps Doyle for next year.

Most of the guys I mentioned they can probably get for around that or less per year, at least based on some of the projected AAV numbers I've seen

If they manage to crush the union, I bet they take advantage of the depressed market. If things stay largely the same, probably not.

Yeah good point. I don't think he's giving our team anything this year.

It's exactly the kind of move you make with spring training in front of you, not behind you

He said they suggested a tweak to his hands/stance, which is something that can bear relatively quick fruit like with Vargas last season and Gonzo in the minors this year.

But overall he hasn't really gotten much playing time to evaluate him on. I suspect Getz and co. were concerned about Peters' slump lingering on which would have potentially opened up more CF ABs for a guy with a high defensive floor there, but Peters has picked it back up since.

Doyle did have that 110mph lineout vs. Manaea and his BABIP is low enough (.231) to suggest some bad luck, so time will tell.

Doyle hasn’t ruled and it’s no surprise but at least Peters has been returning to form. Still think the Sox believe that they can get Doyle back to lifting and pulling.

However, it is an extremely interesting development that today they announced that for the rest of the season and into the AFL, Bonemer will be getting looks in centerfield.

Talk about something nobody saw coming!

Up to this point in the season, he shouldn’t be starting in the postseason. He’s one of the 10 worst starters in baseball this year (100 IP or more). Much rather go the opener path outside of Burke.

Berrios would be kind of outside the box, but at best he’s a 3/4 guy now and has had bad injury luck after being a workhorse.

Maybe they will. They have about 4 weeks to see what they can do with him.

Crushing the Union? Wow. Tell me more.

After his second Sox HR, Doyle now has more HR in 34 ABs at the Rate than in 53 ABs at Coors.

Also a higher SLG (.471 vs. .264) and more RBI (7 vs. 3)

I wouldn’t put money on it.

On paper...absolutely yes. In reality, with JR and the possibility of a very long labor impasse?
Reality may prove to show something else.

I don’t understand these payroll doomer posts. Jerry has almost always rocked mid tier payrolls when semi competitive. When we were actual contenders, we rocked very higher payrolls. How we spent that money sucked, but the reality is he isn’t nearly as cheap in terms of absolute dollars as some here let on.

The Sox are sitting on a projected $98M payroll for next year. That’s for 26 dudes included all Arb eligible guys. The median Opening Day payroll in the MLB this year was $170M. I’d be SHOCKED if we were below $150M next year and in a normal year we’d be at the median. Regardless, $50M can get you two SPs including one legit TOR guy plus bring back Newcomb & Grichuk (or replace them with comparable talents). There will be at least one big free agent added next year…no doubt about it.

We heard that at the deadline too.

He doesn’t pay the players if there is a labor impasse. He’s been gifted a dirt cheap lease arrangement for his stadium. What is all the cost he has to endure if there is a long lockout?
