Maybe not. I was taking from the posts you guys were mocking the Sox because Castillo and Doyle would be non-tendered after the 2026 season. Maybe they would have been. But the Sox wanted them now. I'm guessing that Chris Getz isn't so stupid that he traded Mason Adams and Boston Smith for guys that other teams WEREN'T vying for. I mean, we can pretend that he's so stupid he's trading for the rights to Mordecai Brown, but I doubt that's what's happening. There were markets for Castillo and Doyle.

Where was the market for Castillo and Doyle? Can you find some articles that said that other teams were interested in these two guys?

Why would there be a market for these guys? Why would an expensive starter with a 5+ ERA that was pitching poorly in a pitcher’s park (T-Mobile Park) and owed $23.75 million next year garner any trade interest? Also, why would an outfielder that hasn’t OPS’ed above .600 in two full seasons while playing his home games at Coors be sought after?

You are making excuses for bad moves made by a GM that you will defend no matter what. Getz has made some amazing moves but it’s obvious that he is was in over his head at the deadline. We are sitting here with two injured players, a backup CF that barely plays, and a $23.75 million dollar starter that most Sox fans want removed from the rotation already.

Can you prove that Castillo and Doyle had NO trade interest? If you can't reference a single twitter post or an article, then you're wish-casting.

I mean, can you prove they DID have trade interest? Their teams basically discarded them to the scrap heap. These aren't guys who had roles on bad teams, before the Sox traded for them.

Common sense would dictate that a washed-up pitcher demoted from starter to the bullpen on an absolute dogshit fucking team.... had no value. He was absolutely a DFA candidate. My cousin's husband is a Mariners fan, and he couldn't understand the trade at all.

Common sense would also dictate that a guy who was not a starter and had only played 40 or so games for another absolute dogshit fucking team... had no value.

It takes a special kind of arrogant, or incredibly stupid, to believe your team, who is in a fucking pennant race.... could make use of players that HORRIBLE TEAMS HAD NO USE FOR. Use your fucking head.

I think it’s very clear that Getz both panicked at the deadline and backed himself into a corner by prioritizing control. I’m sure anyone worth a damn, even rentals, had outrageous asking prices to start and Getz didn’t want to give up those guys. Unfortunately, negotiations almost always start off with highly unrealistic demands and the deadline is no different. Had he been willing to wait it out more, he probably could have gotten a better SP at a lower cost for Boston Smith. Instead, he likely jumped on what he thought was the more affordable option at the time, well before the actual deadline. Anyone with the slightest ounce of objectivity could tell that trade was an L from the get go from a cost-benefit perspective. And to no one’s surprise, fixing players mid season is hard and Castillo has been a disaster. At this moment, making no trade would have been better than the “innings” Castillo is giving us. Getz deserves to be ridiculed for this trade because on paper it was really bad and even worse in reality.

The Doyle trade was also super bizarre and even a bit cocky I’d say. Don’t get me wrong, the dude has some serious tools, but has been a disaster the past two years and was going to be a massive project with the bat. To think they could fix him down the stretch reeks of arrogance and it’s not like the cost was just money. Mason Adams was a top 15ish org prospect and is a better a major league pitcher right now than Luis Castillo. To weaken our biggest area of need (SP depth) to add a project 4th OF when you had a young controllable OF who was crushing LHP when healthy just never made an ounce of sense to me. Yes, Periera is made of glass and maybe they didn’t like his CF defense, but that is such a niche need and a questionable way of addressing it.

Ultimately from these two moves, Getz weakened the current team’s rotation and lineup against LHP to improve the OF defense when Peters is sitting. And to make that trade-off, they took on considerable money for next year. I ripped both trades the second they happened and it has nothing to do with hindsight. I also applauded the Brazoban & Bart trades and continue to do so despite the results not being there. There is good process and there is bad process and it’s clear as day that Getz had a bad plan at the deadline, executed said plan poorly, and it’s proven costly right now. I can support not trading your key prospects when you’re competing a year earlier than expected, but there were better trades to be made with guys like Boston Smith, Mason Adams, and others in that tier. I’m not sure how anyone could be arguing otherwise here.

I love Sam but I love having Doyle's glove as a late inning defensive replacement for him.

But but but their record is exactly .500 since the trade deadline...so their moves were therefore neutral, lol.

Except Getz traded away a starting pitcher option that would have been better in the rotation than Castillo for that late inning outfield defense that you love.

Hell, go sign Billy Hamilton out of retirement and you could have the same thing, along with Adams in the rotation instead of Castillo, and Boston Smith still in the minors. It pretty much stinks any way you look at it. There is no polishing these two turd trades.

The Castillo trade is a complete disaster.

Doyle brings something to the Sox this year but they gave up too much for him.

Brazoban has been awful but there is at least a little hope he can be better and close to worth his trade.

Bart obviously bad luck but also probably could get the same thing from players they either already had or could have gotten for free.

Overall, a complete bed-shitting trade deadline. Focusing on guys under contract for next year was a huge mistake. Could have gotten a much better SP for a similar price by just grabbing one of several 2026 FAs. Do that, and the other smaller failures don't matter as much.

Good point. By WE’s own defense of the trades and citing the Sox winning percentage, apparently this means that the trades weren’t a resounding success. The Sox winning percentage has decreased post-trade deadline.

Guys who are past their prime making close to $25M signed for another year while pitching like crap half way through the season usually aren’t hot commodities

Who would possibly go on record now that they had also been interested in acquiring Castillo...unless they were arguing it was to raise the price the Sox paid in Boston Smith after SEA additionally agreeing to take Dominguez's contract back?

Your first prediction was around 73-75 wins.

Nobody was higher than Fegan at 78.

“I've already said that if one of Castillo or Urquidy turn into Fedde, the experiment worked.”

A $22-23 million pitcher is providing the same value as one that cost $1.5 million in Fedde? What a bar you set, although he’s actually not even close to that right now. His bWAR and fWAR are well underwater.

He can’t even surpass a guy who’s been in the minors all season in Urquidy?

Brilliant.

Even Mason Adams has provided the Rockies three opportunities to win in each of his starts…at a fraction of the cost.

Receipts, or you're lying.

I guess it really convenient, then, that you get to spout any BS you want without spending any time proving any of it.

And you are making up BS scenarios that teams would be DFAing players in December that Getz could pick up on waivers, then go back in time and have them play in September. At least my claims work on a normal time/space continuum.

Those sound like pallid excuses for why you can't prove anything you're claiming.

? Talking about them being DFA’d by teams or placed in waivers in August/September.

Pretty much all underpreforming expensive players with long term deals on bad teams get put on waivers in August. Not sure why this idea is suddenly so shocking.

Still don’t get the move unless it’s just another favor.

Robert would’ve been preferable if anything, but they need innings eaters. They need to go full end game and call up Thorpe, Schultz and Bonemer to get this over the finish line.

Robert has been put on the IL already (big surprise)
