• The White Sox nearly wound up with Carlos Delgado instead of Jim Thome. When Cashman inquired about Chicago center fielder Aaron Rowand soon after the World Series, White Sox GM Kenny Williams told him he didn't think the Yankees were a good fit for a trade -- unless they obtained Delgado from Florida. Cashman worked out the parameters of a deal with the Marlins, but the three-way deal fell through when the White Sox then insisted the Yankees pick up a large chunk of Delgado's contract.

I'm actually glad Delgado turned down the trade now. Delgado wouldn't have been enough for us to win the division that year and we would have paid a ton in prospects to have him for half a season. He would have left to free agency anyways.

If Aaron was a Yankee, I wouldn't be able to root for him anymore. Happy as hell that trade didn't happen.

I really don't believe this. I mean Kenny and Paul have both confirmed many teams that Kenny's first target was Jim. I mean, obviously Kenny would say that but Paul has said that Kenny did tell him that as well.

Glad that trade didn't work out. I can just see Delgado b****ing during the year about how he's not a DH, etc....

Delgado's just a headache. Supreme talent though. Thome is definitely the better fit.

Honestly, I rather would have had Delgado. Way less injury concerns. And Delgado didn't want to come here or go anywhere for that matter in 2004. People constantly forget that. He didn't want to leave Toronto because he didn't want to leave for a team and have to go through the hassle of finding a house and all the accomodations for half a season. White Sox fans take things too personal. The way people talk about him make it seem like he said, "f*** the Sox" which was absolutely not the case.

I liken this to when you go out and buy a new tv at Wal-Mart and then pick up a flier and find a similar TV on sale at K-Mart for like $30 less... Who gives a crap... You can't take the other TV back now... So you just have to live with eating the 30 dollars...

That is really hard to believe that after Delgado dissed the Sox and KW, that KW would be pursuing him again.

 

Not only that, Delgado rubbed a lot of people the wrong way when he would not come out for the playing of "God Bless America" every game. I don't think he would have fit in with the Sox Clubhouse.

Agreed. The Sox were tryng to find offensive help not only at DH but also had to worry about Konerko leaving. There were probably lots of possibilities, but Thome was the one that came through.

The way it sounded to me, Kenny didn't pursue Delgado, the propostion was brought to his attention. And Kenny is the kind of GM that will listen to anything.

We also wouldn't have convinced the Marlins to pick up $22 million of Delgado's contract.

I'm happy with the Sox getting Jim.

Maybe Carlos would have been happy here, given the strong Latin presence, but who can say for sure?

All things considered ( what the Sox would have given up, money issues, etc. ), I think KW made the right move.

I hope Jim's elbow and back are sound, that to me is the only question here.
