Saw this blurb in Ken Rosenthal's notes today about the Padres;

My question to you, is IF Joe Crede was ever traded (not that I would want to when he's under our control for another 2 seasons), what compensation must we get back in return for such a deal to take place? It would have to be a pretty damn good deal e.g Scott Linebrink + a very good prospect AT LEAST IMHO.

How about a decent fielder 3B and a leadoff hitting CF since we'd also have to move Fields into LF so Pods would be gone.... In other words that trade would take too much from us...

Fields would have to be the next A-Rod for me to justify getting rid of Crede right now. I just don't understand why the Sox would have waited all that time for Crede to become something. And now that he's playing the best defense in the league at 3B and hitting pretty well, I don't see why the Sox would be willing to give all that up, especially since Fields could go through all the struggles in the majors that Crede did.

Crede is pretty close to untouchable. He is roughly in the top 3 3B in the AL. It would take at least 2 top prospects, and a major league player.

I really think that this organization is going to go full force on resigning crede and trading away fields.

Fields will be converted to another position anyway, his fielding will never quite be major league quality from what I hear. Trading him away might be a mistake, as he is raking.

I think Crede is a FA after 2007. Boras is his agent. The prospects of re-signing wouldn't appear to be very good. Its way too early to speculate on what KW would want or could get for Crede because he's not available right now. If its just for some prospects, if Crede continues to play like he's playing now, he would help the Sox attempt at a championship far more than the prospects would, so I would expect KW to hang on to him and worst case scenerio take the draft picks if he signs somewhere else. As long as the Sox were in contention, there would be absolutely no reason to trade him unless the Sox got major league players that filled needs.

The wildcard here is going to be Crede's contract demands, and, obviously, his agent Scott Boras.

 

There's no doubt that the best case scenario is that the White Sox lock up Crede to a 4-5 year deal, but, given Boras' history, he may not be willing to talk long-term contract until after Crede hits free agency, which at that point, he would be most likely to go to the highest bidder.

 

So, I think Kenny Williams is going to do what he can to try and sign him to an extension, but this could get interesting if Boras is asking for huge money.

 

Also was interesting to see Josh Fields get moved to the OF - that does indicate the White Sox view, and are optimistic, that Crede is their long-term answer at 3B.

That makes him staying even more concrete. With the premium KW is putting on defense, it would take something too good to be true to get him to move Crede, unless Joe just fell apart.

I would agree with this. Keep him as long as you can. Another factor to throw in there is the injury situation with his back. People who 28 who have back problems will get them again. Let alone someone who plays baseball for a living. I'm not saying it's going to happen soon but just something to keep in mind if a long term contract is a possibility.

2 obvious errors in your post, that have been pointed out before. First Crede is here through 2008, second Crede has made it a point that he wont let Boras dictate his future. Im not too worried about losing Crede at all. And if we do, im sure its because we have better options, not because of Crede himself.

And if you are going to trade him away, wait until this offseason where his value around the league as a prospet will likely be much higher than it is right now. My dream move this offseason is still Broadway, Fields, and 2 other good prospects for Miguel Cabrera.

I know you hate Anderson, but I'm not sure why. He's a friggin rookie...he's going to struggle with the bat. I would bet that 3 years from now, you are going to be happy the Sox didn't give up on Anderson after 2 months. Hell, Rowand hit .140 before the Sox sent him down in 2003. He turned into the key piece of a World Championship caliber team, and the key piece of a deal that netted the Sox one of the best power hitters of this generation.

I pretty much agree. Even if his BA/OBP revert to his unimpressive career average, he's proven to be clutch both in the field at at the plate in high-pressure, big-game situations. KW needs to offer him a five-year deal before the end of this year.

 

Fields might need to be used as trade bait for another reliever. I hate to get rid of talent like that, but if we have Crede's rights until 2008 and need help with the 'pen, he's possibly the odd man out.

Joe Crede is a gold glove solid hitting 3Bman. I just hope the Sox don't mess around with this fellow and his contract extension. You always hear this stuff about letting someone test the market to determine fair value only to have them leave to some team like the Yankees, or other deep pocketed team. You keep your stars and Joe is a star.
