If the NFL has any actual interest in trying to change the thug image its been acquiring lately, they will give him a suspension AFTER he is released from jail, at LEAST equal to the length of his sentence. For example, if he gets 2 years in prison... suspend him 2 years after that. And if he gets in trouble in the interim... banned for life. Ideally he gets banned for life. But that is unlikely. NFL star Michael Vick after a court appearance last month. The court papers, filed as Quanis Phillips and Purnell Peace pleaded guilty to dogfighting charges Friday, said all three men "executed approximately 8 dogs that did not perform well in 'testing' sessions" in April of this year. Vick's co-defendants also stipulated that the money behind the Bad Newz Kennels dogfighting operation came "almost exclusively" from the Atlanta Falcons star. Federal prosecutors had given Vick until 9 a.m. ET Friday to accept a plea deal that would require him to spend at least one year in prison on federal dogfighting conspiracy charges, reports say, but there was no immediate word on what he decided. The plea bargain is for 1 year jail time vs. 5 years if it goes to trial, plus he'd lose out on playing time during the trial. If Vick doesn't take the plea bargain and loses his trial, his NFL career is basically over. If he takes the plea bargain, serves a year in jail and maybe another year on suspension from the NFL, he can salvage his career and cut his prison time by 80%. That's why (according to sources) he is/was hesitant to accept a deal admitting any guilt, which could end his career regardless of how much time he spends in the clink. He is no longer being sued by a prison inmate who demanded Vick and others deliver $662 trillion in "British" gold to a federal prison in South Carolina. The bizarre lawsuit was filed earlier this month by inmate Jonathan Lee Riches, who has styled himself as "Credit Card Czar" doing business as "The Nostradamus of Commerce." On Thursday, U.S. District Court Judge Willis Hunt in Atlanta threw out the suit, calling Riches' claims "farcical." Hunt noted Riches had filed 15 lawsuits in 14 different federal courts. Riches even filed a separate lawsuit against Vick in Richmond, which is still active. Soxbadger Posted August 18, 2007 Share Posted August 18, 2007 The problem for Vick may be, accepting any sort of plea bargain may result in the end of his NFL career. So eventhough the risk will vastly incrase, a trial may be the best option because; a) the Falcons will have to pay him for the duration of the trial (potentially if he accepts a plea and goes to jail they could void teh contract) so if the trial drags a few years (think R Kelly) he may get the full value of his contract and at that point whatever happens happens, B) eventhough things may look grim trials are not exactly a sure thing for the govt in high profile cases, if anything the govt has generally not done so well in high profile cases (vicks money really evens the playing field usually prosecution has basically unlimited resources and that drainst eh average defendant, vick can fight for years with the best money can buy). Whenever a govt case rests on "flipper" witnesses, it is inherently weak. The witnesses who saw vick commit the crimes are not going to be the type of people that you would generally believe. Vicks defense team will attack them and the fact that they are testifying to save their own ass, so it will play off to the jury that the only reason vick is being implicated is because by fingering him the witnesses are themselves getting out of their own crime, which is a very powerful incentive to perhaps exaggerate Vick's involvement. because if there was no Mike Vick in this case, there is no way in hell the govt is cutting deals with the other defendants. I can definitely see vick being able to beat a guilty rap, especially because his lawyers should be amazing at picking jurors and all it will take is one to just not want to convict.
