This was a good move and I applauid Dye and the White Sox for doing it. We can compete next year and Dye will be a big part of that reason. What we need now is a stronger pen, Crede at 3B and Fields in LF and a new CF'er. Maybe even a new SS. We will see.

 

I'm glad we have him back. Still don't think we'll compete next year without several other major changes. Still, I think having Dye back means we can concentrate on bringing in a competent CF and compentent SS. If Crede is back healthy and the pen continues to develop like it has been (Wasserman for example) then we may be on our way. Ridding this team of the marginal and/or washed up should be the next move.

For as awful as some think the Sox organization is, realize that Mark Buehrle, Jermaine Dye, Paul Konerko, Jose Contreras, and Jon Garland have all signed significantly less than market value contracts to stay here with the White Sox. For all of the ire that JR, Kenny, and Ozzie get from a vocal minority, this speaks volumes about what the players think of our organization.

I like the signing because I'm a Dye fan, but I don't see any of the big moves MB was saying KW was looking to make happening. I still don't see Garland getting traded unless we get a knockout deal. We still need a SS most importantly. Maybe KW gets John Schuerholz super drunk and finds a way to trade Contreras(who I'm really a huge fan of) for Edgar Renteria. That's more wishful thinking on my part.

 

BTW, I'd love to have Willie back.

I'm way more happy about this signing that I would have thought I would be a month ago. With the way the rest of the outfield is looking we needed something somewhat solid going into next year. I'm not the biggest dye fan in the world, but we needed him back.

Those players salaries equal: $96.625 Million (not counting the money coming in from Philly).

 

According to the salary spreadsheet that Kalapse maintains, taking into account the $5.5 million coming from Philly for Thome, the Sox have guaranteed about $88.6 million (not including any arb guys)

By the way, I still say that the Sox could also go with Fields/Dye in the corners and just sign someone like Willie Harris (which I think would be a smart move as he could be your top of the order guy, steal bases, and play a semi-decent d in center, plus he won't cost near as much as Rowand).

 

 

Boy, an outfield with Fields in left and Dye in right is gonna need two centerfielders.

This is a great move. One less hole to fill for next season. Eating my words on not trading Dye, good job Kenny.

Next year's outfield will be Pods-Rowand-Dye with Erstad and Gonzalez as the 4th and 5th guys

Its great that all these guys are signing for less than market value. The reality is though, this team, with all of them, is tied for last place right now. KW has a lot of work left for the White Sox to legitimately call themselves contenders.

In a case like Harris, I'm not so sure. From what I have gathered online, Harris has made a little over a 1.5 during his major league service. Willie has a chance to CASH IN this off-season, and it most likely will be his only chance.

Since when did Willile become a solution for anyone. We've seen him, hes not a starter in the AL.

 

Count will be dealt this offseason, and that frees up cash.

people seem to be hung up a bit on $100 million payroll number. In todays game, i would say 120mill+ is the new barometer for being a big spending team. With all the attendance records being set and the players salaries going up i would think the Sox can easily handle 110-120 million payroll. I still think Garland or Contreras will be moved to get some salary flexibility but i don't think it's a necessity or precludes the Sox from making a big free agency splash. With the Sox getting 30,000+ a game, the fans are defintely supporting the team and the money is there to be spent.

The LF is already on this team...Josh Fields. Now that may only be for a year, but if Crede is healthy it would be stupid to non-tender him. Not with the defense he provides, plus moving Fields to left would stabilize the outfield offense (with Dye/Fields the d may not be great, but no one is going to tell me Fields couldn't be a serviceable left fielder and Dye, while declining is still at least mediocre in right).

 

However it does mean you need a CF that has some good range and I think Willie could be that guy, obviously Rowand could be as well (but that costs a lot). Of course the Sox could also add Rowand for CF and non-tender Crede going with Fields at 3rd (but financially that will cost the Sox a lot more money).

I like this move. It gives JD the raise that he wants, but only commits the Sox to two years (I'm surprised that JD didn't demand a guaranteed third year).

That doesn't make my eyes bleed at least, but we still have 2 glaring holes we need to figure something out about. Better than I thought we'd be at this point looking towards 2008 though, I like our pitching still. I don't mind this extension either, 2 years for JD at 11 million is worth it if he can be a 30 homer guy the next 2 years and hit .270, and I think he can. And what Rowand said about eating his words about not trading Dye, I echo those sentiments.

While you can't go by everything Williams and Ozzie says, there words have been pretty strong abut the Fields/Crede situation, and they seem pretty content with Josh playing 3rd. It's not like the Sox are trotting out an All-Star in LF every game, if Fields was in the plans for LF next season, I would have to think he would at least be getting sporadic starts over the last month or so, and that hasn't be the case.

 

I'm just not sold on Fields being the automatic LF for next season. It really doesn't seem the Sox are counting on much for Joe...

IT is more that they are not going to play him at LF right now because they don't know whether Crede can play, plus they are going to want as much leverage as they can. Plus, moving to left isn't going to be that difficult. A full spring training, plus some off-season drills and he'll be serviceable in little time (He's a good enough athlete).

 

However, if Fields makes defensive strides as the remainder of the season progresses they could decide they are better off going after a FA outfielder (or trading for one). The problem is if they do that than they really have two pickups left because I don't think they have any other ML starting outfielders on the current roster (that is if Fields is at 3rd).

 

If you stick with Crede, than all you got to do is find a CFer (and I realize that isn't easy) and than swap someone at SS for Uribe. The more I see it the more I see the pen staying pretty much the same (give or take an in-house swap) with Contreras probably on his way out (and possibly Garland).

If he passes his physical and is healthy, there is no way you'd get anyone near as good as Crede at 5M. If you don't bring back Crede, than it means you need to sign 2 FA outfielders (or trade for 2). Rowand costs 10M and gets at least 3/4 years and than who is the other guy I don't know (probably whichever vet sticks around and would take a 1/2 year deal).

 

That costs a lot more than the $5M Crede costs and the one FA/Trade that you need to fill the outfield (with Fields filling in at LF). Plus doing this you are still leaving an opening in case you have a young outfielder develop who would than swing to LF or CF with Fields moving to 3rd when Crede leaves as a FA the following year).
