October 28, 200817 yr Not that there was much doubt; SI.com's Jon Heyman reports that the White Sox have decided against re-signing Ken Griffey Jr. It was safe to assume they wouldn't. Griffey isn't an answer in center field for the White Sox, and there's no room for him elsewhere. He hit .260/.347/.405 in 41 games after being acquired from the Reds. If he plays again next season, I think he could end up in Tampa FWIW.
October 28, 200817 yr Author QUOTE (CryptviLL @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 03:06 PM) good. stupid trade from the beginging Well for what it cost, it was worth a shot, but I think you'll find that most fans on here disagreed with Ozzie's use of him in CF.
October 28, 200817 yr I guess he won't be going into the HoF with a White Sox cap. He gave all he had, sadly, at this point in his career, it wasn't too much. It was easy to see what a great professional he is. There have been a number of players who stunk up the ballpark and were asses. I have no respect for those guys. I have a lot of respect for Griffey.
October 28, 200817 yr QUOTE (CryptviLL @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 03:06 PM) good. stupid trade from the beginging Not exactly, yeah griffey was a waster but It got rid of Massett and the subsequent use of Massett. This is a pure case of addition by subtraction. He belongs in either AAA or some weak division in the NL.
October 28, 200817 yr I hope to see Griffey back soon. In the dugout, on the bench, as the hitting coach.
October 28, 200817 yr Griff played through a leg injury without much stink and was called the ideal teammate in the clubhouse. It was AWESOME seeing him in a Sox uni
October 28, 200817 yr Does this mean they wont be offering arbirtration? I had always assumed that they would decline the option because it was quite pricy for the production, but it seems silly to give up a draft pick for the chance that Jr would accept it.

If the Sox offer Griff arbitration and he accepts (the risk is always there) he will make, at a minimum, 10 million dollars next season. That's why they wouldn't offer. And no, I don't think Jon Heyman knows whether or not the Sox will offer him arbitration, them not being interested in resigning him isn't really an indicator one way or the other.
October 28, 200817 yr yeah can someone break down the financial implications of the possibilities at this point
October 28, 200817 yr The move actually turned out to be semi decent with CQ going down. He didn't produce much, but it wasn't horrible.
October 28, 200817 yr Kind of sucks...seeing a legend, even if he was over the hill, in a Sox uniform was fantastic, and giving him a shot in the playoffs for the first time since leaving the AL was awesome too. I think he'll have a good year next year, but resigning him may very well send the wrong message to others on the current roster, even if Griffey was fantastic in the clubhouse. If Griff hangs around for 2-3 more years, I could certainly see him becoming the new butt of KW re-trading jokes.
October 28, 200817 yr QUOTE (CryptviLL @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 07:06 PM) good. stupid trade from the beginging I don't think it was a bad mid season move at all, but long term he is no answer for our need in CF

And no, I don't think Jon Heyman knows whether or not the Sox will offer him arbitration, them not being interested in resigning him isn't really an indicator one way or the other. It's entirely possible that the Sox had some sort of arrangement with Griffey's people that they might offer him arbitration if he agrees not to resign. If the Dodgers can do that with Manny there's no reason the Sox can't also. Depends on what Griffey's looking for. If he wanted a 1 year deal with anyone, he'd probably take that. If he was looking to start somewhere...he'd probably decline.
October 28, 200817 yr QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 03:28 PM) yeah can someone break down the financial implications of the possibilities at this point Griff hit .314 with runners in scoring position for us.
October 29, 200817 yr It seemed like 10 or so times he was just just just off hitting one out of the cell too. He got a fair amount of doubles IIRC.
October 29, 200817 yr The big rational part of me agrees with not bringing him back, but the little bit of kid left in me is sad he's no coming back. We already have enough outfielders with Quentin, Swisher, Dye, Anderson, Wise, etc. The fan in me is going to miss a legend play for the Sox. Best of luck Junior!!!!!!!
October 29, 200817 yr Great suggestion. He should be our next hitting coach. What guy had a sweeter swing than Griffey? I'm not blaming Walker for our weird offense, but now that it's the offseason why not make a change there? I mean Walker was a pretty mediocre hitter himself and couldn't get our guys to do squat except hit bombs on occasion. Unless CQ believes Walker is a god, let Walker go now before it becomes a distraction during the season again. Griffey as player/hitting coach at 3 million a year.
October 29, 200817 yr QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 12:45 PM) I'll never forget him throwing out Cuddyer. word
