December 4, 201015 yr Author I can see Boston extending him to a very lucrative deal, something like 8 years/160m
December 4, 201015 yr Looks like an almost done deal mods do you want to update title or thread? Link: http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/reds..._talk_gonzalez/ ORLANDO, Fla. — According to a major league source, trade talks between the Red Sox and San Diego Padres with regard to first baseman Adrian Gonzalez have reached the stage where medical clearance and a contract extension may be the only things standing in the way of a deal that would bring the lefthanded-hitting slugger to Boston. The 28-year-old Gonzalez is expected in Boston today for a physical. Talks have centered around some of Boston’s top prospects, including first baseman Anthony Rizzo and righthanded pitcher Casey Kelly. The deal would likely involve three or four players from the Sox, including one who is major league-ready. The Sox likely would have to be assured that Gonzalez’s right shoulder, for which he underwent surgery last month, is healing properly, and would allow him to start the season. While talks have heated up recently, Sox general manager Theo Epstein and Padres counterpart Jed Hoyer have discussed a possible deal for some time, dating to last year’s winter meetings. Both Hoyer and San Diego’s new senior vice president of baseball operations, Josh Byrnes, were former assistants under Epstein in Boston. Whether the Red Sox would need a contract extension in place to complete the deal is unknown, but they would likely have to know that an extension is plausible. Calls to Gonzalez’s agent, John Boggs, went unreturned. Gonzalez, who was raised in the San Diego area, has an inside-out swing that is perfectly suited for Fenway Park’s left-field wall. He has hit at least 30 home runs in each of the last four seasons, playing half of his games in pitcher-friendly Petco Park. He also has won two Gold Gloves at first base. The feeling was that the Sox planned to take a run at Gonzalez after this season when he becomes a free agent, but the Padres are said to be ready to deal now rather than wait until the trading deadline. By then, the Padres could be in contention, and it would be more difficult to trade their top star. The Red Sox have been courting free agent outfielders Carl Crawford and Jayson Werth in recent days, but it appears they would shy away from giving an eight-year deal to Crawford, and could add Werth, in addition to Gonzalez, if agent Scott Boras’s asking price isn’t too high. The addition of Gonzalez would shift Kevin Youkilis to third base, and the Sox would likely drop out of the Adrian Beltre talks. Boras and the Red Sox spoke yesterday, presumably about Beltre and Werth. Gonzalez is under contract this season for $6.2 million. An extension would likely be for six years at an average of $20 million per season. Edited December 4, 201015 yr by chisoxfan09
December 4, 201015 yr I wonder how San Diego can just get prospects, I would have thought Bard would have had to be in this trade, especially if Heath Bell will be moved at some point.
December 4, 201015 yr Why are people upset about this? Did you actually think that after acquiring Dunn, the Sox had a chance to get Gonzalez? Simply put, we were never going to be able to afford the huge extension he wanted, and had no prayer to compete with other team's prospects.

I believe we could've had him last year for Beckham, plus others. Just what I believe

Wow, what a ridiculously backwards way of looking at things. If that's truly how the Padres feel, they are a stupid, stupid team. "Well, we'd better trade this guy before we accidentally contend for the division or something..."

"Well, we'd better trade this guy before we accidentally contend for the division or something..." Its basically what happened this season. Its also the way a lot of people think when the Sox have a good contributing player 2 years away from free agency. To hell with he might help the team win, his trade value is higher than it will probably be a year from now, get rid of him. I'm sure SD is happy they didn't trade Gonzalez last winter when his "trade value" was theoretically higher, and traded him for the likes of Jordan Danks, Tyler Flowers, guys like that. Trade value is a 2 way street. The guys you may be getting back may never have higher trade value.

Selling off key pieces in the middle of a pennant race can create a lot of resentment with your fans. Look how long it took our fan base to recover. I don't think there's anything wrong with trying to avoid a similar situation as long as your return isn't going to be insanely better at the deadline.

It is ironic with the way the Padres do business that they are owned by a former super agent.
December 4, 201015 yr QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 04:38 AM) Wonder who the Pads will get back. Early reports are Kelly, Rizzo, and Fuentes. Pretty underwhelming package.

December 4, 201015 yr QUOTE (pktmotion @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 10:29 AM) No kidding. I thought Bard or Ellsbury would certainly be going to SD. Are these guys similar to what we gave up for Peavy? Meaning, absolute garbage? If that's the case, then poor San Diego- having nothing to show for AGon or Peavy but Clayton Richard and his awful, awful splits. I know it's too early to tell, but what are the ceilings on some of these guys?

December 4, 201015 yr I'm surprised that the Padres did this. Kelly is very raw and not near a lock. I'm quite surprised and don't think the Pads did very well, but what do I know. Red Sox did great though.
December 4, 201015 yr QUOTE (SEALgep @ Dec 4, 2010 -> 12:02 PM) Kelly is supposed to be their top prospect, and a top of the rotation starter He's still a B-grade prospect. Projects more as a middle-rotation guy. Won't crack top 50 on anyone's lists. Too low to be the "main get" in a trade for a MVP-caliber player.

I know it's too early to tell, but what are the ceilings on some of these guys? Rizzo, IMO, is probably the best piece they got. He's a 1B prospect that has had an .800+ OPS in his three minor league years. But one could argue that need is filled since they already have a 1B power prospect in Kyle Banks. Kelly has three pitches but is still very raw and coming off a year where his ERA was over 5. (side note: on how overhyped BOS/NYY prospects are; he's supposed to be the Red Sox top prospect?) Fuentes is way too young to judge and PTBNL is probably going to be nobody significant either. too quote "The League" this is definitely trade rape.
December 4, 201015 yr People generally think about these deals as 'trading for a player'. Gotta remember... you're not trading a player... you're trading a player's contract. What the RedSox acquired is 1 year of AG's services at $5.5M + two draft picks if he left in free agency. What they offered the Pads had to provide fair value for that, plus some premium to make their offer more attractive than other teams.

What they offered the Pads had to provide fair value for that, plus some premium to make their offer more attractive than other teams. Well, one thing you're missing is that the Red Sox have reportedly obtained a 72 hour window to negotiate an extension with Gonzalez or veto the trade, so you've got the calculation wrong. Even if that was the calculation though, I think the feeling expressed so far is that 1 year of AG at that price plus the 2 picks should have brought back more than the Padres got. They should have gotten a serious MLB ready guy.
