-Plenty of people love the notion that it is about who you know and not exactly what you know to get the job.

 

This is more true than you may want to believe. This is the reason for scholastic organizations, job fairs, and networking sessions. To get to a high level within the real world, no matter your profession, you really need to know people and to have their trust. Sure, some of it will be proving what you know, but when you get to a certain level of the professional world, when comparing two equal candidates, the one who is more well known within the company by anybody - whether it through a connection of another company or within the company itself - is going to get that job.

 

I can tell you one thing, I am dealing with it right now. I am more than qualified for an entry level job in the business world, but because I really don't have any good connections, I have struggled getting a job to the point where I am just looking for any job because I need money. If I planned on being in Bismarck for longer than 6 months, there would be several professional organizations I would try to get involved in. However, I don't plan on being in Bismarck long, so at this point it's getting a job that has some intrinsic value (looking at being a server at a restaurant, where I will at least be able to get some type of customer service experience on my resume, though I have several other outstanding applications to businesses around the area) so I can have at least some money when I do eventually move away.

Agreed, especially in a tough job market. Personally I got my first internship through the company my dad worked for, and when I applied the next year for my next internship the company I was interviewing for turned out to be the company that my manager had worked at for 17 years. Now, this didn't get me the internship, but it probably helped through the process (I had excellent interviews through too though).

 

My number one recommendation for those looking into business in college is to join a business organization, such as a business fraternity, since you gain a huge alumni network among the many other perks.

Doesn't really fit the "everyone loves it" aspect of this thread, but I don't love the idea that I occasionally hear that some people consider George Harrison to be the most talented of the Beatles. Nonsense. Hipster nonsense.

I'd certainly place George as the most technically proficient of the three by quite a bit, but there simply is no Beatles without the never to be equalled Lennon/McCartney collaborative songwriting.

I don't think I've ever gotten a job where I didn't know somebody (or knew somebody who knew somebody else) within the company. Even the s***ty retail jobs I had in high school I got through connections.

Spring Training Baseball - $$$, zero intensity, and you mostly only see AA and AAA players.

 

The national perception that Wrigley Field has always been some kind of baseball Mecca. It's really not that long ago that they couldn't draw flies to the place - even with its signature urine smell.

Naturally, this doesn't surprise me. I happen to love Pearl Jam, but most of the people I have ever met that listen to Pearl Jam just basically say "what's so great about this?" I dunno, I just find it awesome.
