I heard Bernstein on the SCORE Friday say that the Sox will try to get compensation from the Marlins. Tony La Russa barely had a cup of coffee on a major league coaching staff and was promoted to coach the Sox from AAA after working up through the minors. Whitey Herzog was in player development, primarily. Point is, many different paths to managerial success. New blood has to come from somewhere. For the love of God, Sandberg knows his way around a major league clubhouse. I don't know how getting signs from a dugout to give to a hitter or runner is going to make him more prepared. Of course, that did work for Terry Bevington and Mike Quade. Oh wait....... I'm not saying I would hire the guy, but he did what a lot of guys wouldn't, he went back to riding buses. I think the major plus of that experience is to learn to manage the egos involved and to deal with the media, not because the game is any different at the major league level than in the minor leagues.
