I was listening to Abreu, and the first thing I recognized was "Kenny Williams".

You need to remember he goes to arbitration if he lives up to a point where he would get a raise. It would be higher than the $7M annual but most likely closer to $11 or $12.

I took it as Abreu would have to opt out. If he sucks, the Sox are still on the hook for the $68 million no matter what.

It would '18 and '19 that the Sox could get hit, as they comps get going to higher paid players instead of lower arb status players.

That is what it takes now to get those deals done. It could have been worse, as Cespedes has an absolute out after 4 years. They could lose him completely without being able to offer arb to keep him.

I agree. He is going to have to be awesome for this to cost the Sox much more than they are locked into now. That's not bad.

 

People need to look at what Ryan Howard had to do to get $10 million.
