Sox were close to 3 way deal

After the Bacon/Balls/Dicks trade scenario Castro was my second thought. The Marlins Danks rumors coupled with the big deal the Marlins made with the Astros, the fact that we may have had interest in Cosart, etc. there could have been something there, and the 2 teams just decided it would be easier to make a standard 2 team deal rather than involve all the salary complications the Sox side would involve.

But if it was Castro coming here, Danks and cash going to FLA, prospects from the Sox heading out etc. that could make some sense.

Bacon, dicks, and balls is your first though? Hmmm...

Hahn was on 670 this morning and said that it was for a long targeted player. He also said that it "could" be revisited in the offseason. I'm going with Yasmani Grandal. He was in the lineup and warming up and then was scratched for no reason. Sox have been interested in the past.

Yup, I also think it was Grandal, with Viciedo likely the player we would have shipped out. Even if we had to include a decent prospect, that's a deal I make 10 out of 10 times.

Yep.

Still one of my favorite players in that draft class. I really hope Hahn can acquire him somehow.

my problem with Grandal is his hitting. he plays 1b and catcher.

I think this might be why.. well.. In his own words.

Castro and Flowers would be a decent complementary tandem given their platoon splits

Long-targeted, could be revisited, and hope to tell the fan base sometime are the key parts of his quotes, as some have suggested.

We want this mystery guy bad so who is it? Our approach under KW/RH is to grab damn-near MLB-ready guys. I woul guess the following:

Not a 3B- why use Reed's value to get a guy that isn't your guy anyway.

Not a MI- just due to depth. Franklin wouldn't be revisited now.

Not 1B- c'mon.

MLB ready C, OF or Pitcher by default?

After thinking about this some more, JR Murphy is a likely candidate as well. I'll be honest, I'm not impressed by his minor league numbers at all.

It didn't happen so who cares?

Hahn said during an interview today that he still is hoping to trade for this particular target. I believe he said he hopes to introduce him to the fans this winter.

good process of elimination. after the trade deadline, I was scouring the fa list coming up and I

really don't see a catcher that knock my sox off. so I still think it still might be a mlb ready catcher.

murphy or sanchez from yank.

pitchers, we need more mlb pitchers either / and / or relief pitchers.

b/c as a sports forum, it fun to talk about. you know to scrutinize mlb teams farm

systems players.

MLBTR Is saying the Reds were dangling Mat Latos...I wonder if they also would trade Homer Bailey and he's the guy Hahn was talking about. He obviously fits the bill of a guy the Sox have long wanted.

Who are we going to trade for him that won't cost key players from the major league roster (Alexei Ramirez to take Cozart's place?) or half our minor league prospects?

Not a good match for their asking price (like Hamels with the Phillies, we can't afford to take on that type of contract and give up 3-5 top prospects).

First and foremost the Sox CAN take on any contract.

A deal however would be hard to come by. Just speculating on a guy who the Sox have been linked to for awhile now.

just a question, do you think that the sox is ready to make that kind of move, maybe in the offseason

with a high free agent salary player. I would like your opinion.

imho my thoughts will be yes.

Yes I believe they will. Not necessarily a free agent position player but maybe a pitcher (Scherzer, Lester, Shields) all come to mind that would fit well in between Sale and Quintana.

Other than that, I expect a busy winter with trades for position players.

I think they should to be honest. Maybe not Scherzer/Lester/Cueto, but Shields/Masterson? Yes.

I'm really hoping the payroll is back up around 80-90M next year. That would mean they spent about 30-40M which should mean we have a quality RH starter, a quality bat or 2, and some quality arms in the pen.

Wow, I forgot about Cueto, I would love to add him. And he'll only be 29 next year...

I'd give him 5 years/75 million

He's got an option that I'm sure they pick up, but I'm just throwing him out there hypothetically.

Did not know that, but thank you.

Yea and he will get a lot more than 75mil, I say minimum 20 a yr. I don't really want Masterson, is like the sox to get someone that we know what to expect like shields. Masterson is just awful right now and what if we sign him thinking he can be fixed but he stays awful? Reminds me of someone like bj upton
