I would imagine that is not how it works. In order to sign Adam LaRoche, I would bet there was a discussion of his role and playing time. I bet the Sox would not have been able to sign him by telling him he was going to be a platoon DH. In order to sign him they told him he'd be an everyday player. They can't then say, "sorry we were lying. We have Emilio Bonifacio to start in your place against lefties. We decided to lie to you and now you're here for 2 years."
