August 10, 201510 yr The Sox should've claimed him...SMH. This team is still in contention, why not go for it?

August 10, 201510 yr QUOTE (Mike F. @ Aug 10, 2015 -> 11:08 AM) The Sox should've claimed him...SMH. This team is still in contention, why not go for it? No, they are not in contention. Not even close to being in contention actually.

August 10, 201510 yr I was just starting to think we had heard unusually little about players being put on waivers this yera.
August 10, 201510 yr Ha, so Pads had similar tailspin as Sox after saying they were still in contention and standed pat.
August 10, 201510 yr Author QUOTE (woods of ypres @ Aug 10, 2015 -> 11:13 AM) Expensive? I can think of about 70 million reasons.
August 10, 201510 yr Author QUOTE (GreenSox @ Aug 10, 2015 -> 03:29 PM) Have we heard anything about Sox players clearing waivers? Alexei, maybe? Haven't seen a thing.
August 10, 201510 yr Shields has a horrible contract going forward and can't keep the ball in the park. He'd be a terrible fit.
August 11, 201510 yr QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 10, 2015 -> 05:28 PM) Shields has a horrible contract going forward and can't keep the ball in the park. He'd be a terrible fit. Considering that you may be able to sign the Shark for around $20 million and he's younger, I don't think this would a realistic option on that alone. From MLB Trade Rumors: Shields is an interesting case, however, as high-payroll teams in need of starting pitching could still conceivably make a move for the veteran right-hander. Shields is owed roughly $2.25MM for the remainder of this season, and then $21MM in each of the next three seasons, plus a $16MM club option (with a $2MM buyout) for 2019. He can also opt out of his deal following the 2016 season, meaning that some teams could make a move thinking they’d only be committed to Shields for little over a year. Then again, Shields will turn 35 in December 2016, so he’s probably just likely to stick with his current deal since teams may be hesitant to pay a pitcher more than $43MM guaranteed for his age-35 and age-36 seasons.
August 11, 201510 yr LOL at baseball. Last offseason no way Royals could afford him; he was destined to sign for huge bucks. Now NOBODY wants him. Way to roll, baseball execs. You made Shields a zillionaire for no reason. Nobody wants him now after everybody had to have him and pay him MEGA bucks! That will be this offseason with Shark. And the fanbase will be all excited during the winter ... til reality hits in May and June and they want to dump the salary, lol.
