Adam Eaton is still only 26. He was a lower round draft pick which means he's an overachiever in baseball terms. The fact he's got his average up to .283 means he's had two pretty good offensive seasons in a row. So are you happy he looks like he'll be the Sox CF for at least the next 5-6 seasons?

Did he gain so much more experience this year he'll be an all-star candidate in seasons to come? I will give him credit. I despised him earlier this season but now must give him props it looks like.

Most definitely. We have a much needed leadoff man who can put up a .350 OBP or better in CF. He didn't set the world on fire, but he provides us what we all needed.

Definitely a player to build around on the offensive side along with Abreu.

If the Sox believe Trayce is the better defensive CFer next season, he should play in CF. Eaton has the bat to play in the corner. Defense is greatly improved this way. Trayce has the tools to be better in CF.

 

I am happy with Eaton in CF, but I'd be happier with the above scenario. It can really shore up the defense IMO. Melky-Eaton-Avi is plain awful.

As far as I'm concerned Abreu an Eaton are the only 2 I'd keep. The rest of the hitters are trade bait, holes we need to fill. I'd have no problem moving him to left if we got a better center fielder or if maybe Trayce turns out to be the real deal. I think he might be a better lead off bat then center fielder.

Ideally you'd move him out of center.

His defense this year has been much worse than it was last year, but I don't expect that trend to continue.

 

He's hitting .332 since the ASB. That is what raised his average so much. I remember last year he was hitting about .297 on the last day of the year. Went 3-3 by the 6th inning, average was .300, and he was pulled instantly

It's so hard to find a good leadoff hitter and average to above average defensive CF. This year not so great defensively, but last year he was pretty damn good.

 

According to Baseball Reference, in his 2 years with the Sox, he has a combined 9.3 WAR. 5.6 last year and 3.7 this year. He's 26, and with so few offensive building blocks, you don't trade that away.....

My God, when will this insanity end? Eaton has put up better numbers at the Major League level than Trayce Thompson did in AAA. Yet Trayce Thompson is a building block? How is Eaton not as good as his numbers? He has 1400 Major League at bats. That is a pretty substantial sample size and I don't think there is any reason to believe he has even peaked yet. You know who's not as good as their numbers so far? Trayce Thompson.

 

Trading Eaton wouldn't really make all that much sense. He is locked up for 6 more years at a very team friendly contract. Nobody is going to blow you away with a trade offer and you would be lucky to get one guy back who ends up as good as Eaton so what the f*** would be the point in trading him?

I think Robin has done a pretty decent job getting all of the young players in the lineup. He's given a substantial number of at bats to Saladino, Olt, Johnson and Thompson over the last few weeks.

I think hes a keeper and glad he overcame his early struggles. Hes ok defensively in CF but ideally I would like them to move him to LF, put Thompson in CF and sign or trade for a RF, Heyward or Puig. that would be an above average defensive outfield that would go a long way in helping our rookie pitchers as they break in.

Eaton has been very good in a Sox uniform and is one of the only guys to earn his keep in my opinion.

 

If I'm Hahn, the only guys that are in the lineup right now and are a lock to be starters next year are Eaton, Abreu, Melky, and maybe Alexei if he gives the Sox a discount. Everyone else should be on the hot seat as far as their spot in the lineup next year.

 

You can't win games with only 3 or 4 good hitters.
