Same dilemma as if the Sox were looking at signing any other FA outfielder. If necessary, LaRoche becomes a platoon/ bench bat for late innings with Melky at DH and Kim in LF. I like that Kim won't cost a pick or prospects to acquire, just aa contract.

 

Of course, this doesn't help the left side of the infield situation but he would provide some pop from the left side of the plate.

Kim's defense is suppose to be "solid" so it could be safe to say he would b a upgrade in LF. I really really hope the Sox get afterr this ball player and sign him.

 

If I had to choose I would easily go after Kim over Hwang. I know Kim's stats are from playing in the KBO but I think he has a better chance of adjusting to the MLB than Hwang.

Isn't Davis primarily a DH? Is this player projected as an OF?

The hit rate on Korean players really hasn't been all that good, their monster stats don't seem to come with them.

The Sox had 1 every day position player to have an OBP above .350, Eaton and he's it. I'll take help from wherever and whomever. Kim hit for AVE, drew walks with a low K-rate. Surely his stats won't fully translate in the MLB but for the money, the risk is rather minimal.

And Upton's OBP has been on a slow but steady decline since its peak in 2011 and has been below .350 the last two seasons. If fans want Upton that's fine, I get it but I'm not interested in a long term big money deal with him. I just don't think his performance will live up to the contract he signs which is why I'm open to other options.

Yup and he's only 28. Not sure calling 2011 his "peak" when he is in his prime years now. I completely agree this team desperately needs OBP players. Hell, I've been adamant on it this whole offseason, but we also desperately need power to go along with a respectable OBP. Upton fills both of those adequately. Would like to see if this guy's plate discipline translates though.

OBP was brought up because I mentioned Kim's OBP in the KBO. It was not me that brought Upton's name into a thread about Kim so how about the Upton discussions stay in the Upton thread and Kim's discussion stays here.

Kang broke the game of baseball his final year in Korea, though the rest of his career wasn't anything special. I think he's pretty impossible to compare anyone to.

Post-steroid era aging curves are different, guys. Players are peaking much sooner. Also, not every guy is the same.

 

Upton's age is an advantage because it doesn't seem likely to be affected by age-related decline soon, but we need to stop pretending he's a lock to improve the next few years just because he isn't 30 yet.
