As a 30 year old coming off an almost 7 WAR season he settles for 3 years $75 million. If he opts out next year after being paid $27.5 million, can he get another 3 year $75 million contract as a 31 year old if he puts up a 3 WAR season?

His agent could be banking on big spenders like the Yanks and Dodgers getting into the mix as well. I tknow the Yanks have salary coming off the books after '16 and if the Dodgers can move salaries like Ethier and/or Crawford, they could be in there as well. Maybe even Boston after Papi retires or if they can move one of Panda or Ramirez. The Angels will have CJ Wilson's 20M salary coming off the books after '16 as well.

 

That's four teams known to be big spenders that weren't in the mix for Cespedes. Next year should be a much different story.

Simon notes the projections at Fangraphs boosted the Mets’ win total by two after signing Cespedes. While some will argue that not to be a large enough differentiation, the point Simon seeks to get across is not a specific number of wins which Cespedes will provide but rather that the difference probably won’t be as striking as it was upon his acquisition last July.

Except his WAR is more likely to be in the 3.5-4.0 range than 6+.

 

So if we're not going to spend $25-27.5 million on those projections, it seems highly unlikely we'd be able to acquire him in the low $20's, not to mention one year older/additional wear & tear on his body (not to mention the smoking and finally age uncertainty with Cubans).

 

Remember, the original goal was 6 years and $140-150 million...so that leaves 5 years and $112.5-122.5 remaining to pick up.

sources: Orioles were a 3rd team in on cespedes Friday. (unsure if there were more). Like nats, O's had 5-yr bid on table.

 

Ouch, not even in the top three according to Heyman.

Which means the Orioles, Nats, Angels, Cards, Rangers, Brewers, Cubs....could all still be in on Jackson or Fowler.

Wow, maybe im just too conservative but how do you pass up that deal for 3/75? I realize its more AAVand there is the opt out but 110 guaranteed. He must have really liked the Mets or his agent convinced him he can do better with next year's FA class.

From what I saw this morning the Nationals' offer penciled out to like $77 million in npv over the course of the 5 years.

Granted, this is a spring training game, but this is likely representative of what you get with Cespedes at times. I'm ok with not giving him the largest AAV salary in Sox history.

Lol - ask the Mets who they'd rather trust with their chances to return to the World Series this year: Yoenis Cespedes at what they're willing to pay him...or Austin Jackson, at the bargain basement price of $5M.

 

If as a fan you are concerned about "AAV", then Jackson is easily your choice. If as a fan you are concerned about winning and returning to the postseason with a chance of capturing a championship, then Cespedes is your choice, and you let the ownership group running their billion dollar operation figure out how to pay for it.
