Makes sense to me. Obviously, I suspect this will impact the value of a subscription there, but they aren't really in a position to hire just some technically-qualified reporter. At least that's my suspicion. It was a risk and it's an unusual operation, so you need someone who isn't just competent but also really cares about the Sox and will basically be a passionate co-fan with those two. Not to mention that James's tendencies to dive deep and go for less news-of-the-day kind of stuff really suits Sox Machine well but isn't necessarily the standard fare of a beat reporter. A place like Sox Machine can contribute by doing the standard "Hey Will, take me through today's big win" kind of reporting, but it's really not their lane so if you're going to invest you need someone who will bring some extra/different points of view like James did.

Ok, by overall scouting grade of 45 Boston Smith would've landed somewhere between 9 and 12 in our system. Smith is 13 on Pipeline in the Seattle system. Robbie Ray cost the Padres #4 and #9 prospects, and SF is eating half of his remaining salary (~$4m). Miguel Mendez is 16th in SF's system now with an overall of 45, and Joniel Hernandez is 22nd with an overall of 40. That would be something like Bergolla (#10) or Sandlin (#11) and anyone from #12-#20 in our system, with the Sox eating all the remaining salary to top that deal, or maybe including both Bergolla and Sandlin, or one of Hagen Smith/McDougal/Fauske. Are you doing that deal for 10-ish starts of Robbie Ray? The Dodgers didn't trade Lauer, and why would they? He can serve as a swingman or starter as they need. Beiber's been pretty awful. Almost a run and a half worse than Castillo by FIP.

Yes, I do the same thing on drives and long second shots. The podium is super durable and took me a while to put together. It’s held together with numerous cam screws and cam locks. The actual Golden Tee system is just the deck part of it and it drops right into the podium snugly. Basically it doesn’t move when I put the WHAMMY on it, the podium or the deck. This is my “kids are leaving for college” midlife crisis purchase and hobby. 🤣

Not a catcher, no, and I was fine with the Bart acquisition. It just didn’t work out due to a random injury. However, Getz obviously had the prospects to trade for a rental starter, even after the Castillo trade. It doesn’t appear that Getz ever considered rentals since he even mentioned the additional year(s) of control for all the players he acquired at the deadline. He pretty much said it himself. That was the mistake.

I suspect that many people here on Soxtalk would agree with the criticisms and concerns of what private equity firms have done. We are all aware of companies that PE groups have ruined. The problem is the bizarre, incessant insistence by one poster that Justin Ishbia is uniquely diabolical compared to other MLB owners and that his ulterior motive is to buy the team from the benevolent Jerry Reinsdorf and somehow bleed the White Sox franchise dry before flipping it for a profit - casting it aside as yet another PE conquest for him. There's no room for rational debate, just constant lashing out and personal insults at everyone while claiming that he doesn't care about the issue. My guess is that the irrational anger at Ishbia centers around the fact that he is uniquely qualified, due to his personal wealth, to make new stadium happen - most likely in the South Loop. Ishbia suddenly dropping his Twins bid and emerging as the likely next Sox owner last year has changed the South Loop proposal from an unlikely Jerry pipe dream to a decent chance of actually happening. This might be why we keep hearing about PE malfeasance, Winnetka mansions, unsolvable ingress/egress issues, unstable infill land, polluted waterways that magically go from a river to a highly toxic canal once you go south of Roosevelt and then back to a river with water taxi service when you get to Ping Tom Park. Is Ishbia's mansion in Winnetka worthy of criticism? Arguably yes from other Winnetka residents, but I don't see how it affects someone's rooting for the White Sox. Are there broader concerns about the actions of private equity firms in general. Yes, but again, this really shouldn't be much of a hot topic relating to the future ownership of the Sox.

It was a good addition but I believe Tray was expecting a better catcher acquisition than Bart. If it was the 2024 version of Bart we were getting, that injury would look even worse.

It's funny how people wanted Getz to trade Bonemer, Carlson and others, but wail at the loss of Boston Smith and Mason Adams. Is there a mystery cache of top prospects that we've never heard of, but would have gotten every top player on the market in trade?
