Most teams don't mortgage their future to get one level deeper in the playoffs. And most of the rich teams already have most of what they need. The Dodgers always have 16 pitchers coming off the IL and another 12 going on, so they always have fresh arms. A team like the Orioles looks to be at a weird point of their competitive curve, so they're finally spending some of their prospect capital.

While I think the GWRBI is a meaningless statistic, I can understand awarding the guy who knocked in clutch runs that took the lead, and not guys who produced in garbage time that a shaky bullpen eventually turned into meaningful runs.

I don't think anybody's suggesting a trade package of Bonemer/Hagen Smith for Robbie Ray at the TDL. Something more like Rikuu Nishida for Michael Soroka would allow the Sox to lose that series gracefully.

I think the Sox have crossed over. They still have gaps in their depth where somebody can come in and get playing time if they pick up and produce, like Kelenic. But the days of letting a guy fester with a .453 OPS for months of at-bats are behind us.

Yeah, as this group of guys comes off the IL, I can't see Acuña surviving that. If Kelenic gets hot as the plate, I could see Ant, Pereira and Kelenic being the starters. Hays, Peters, Hill on the bench. The only thing saving Acuña right now is he's the only backup IF.
