Sheets played his age 22 season in A ball and then his age 23 season in AA. Vaughn played his age 21 season in A ball, then missed a competitive year because of COVID, and then played his age 23 season in the major leagues. And Vaughn’s numbers weren’t much different last year than what Sheets did in AA at age 23. I think people underestimate how good of a hitter Vaughn can be.

I have no idea if we are pursuing Conforto, but if we are, it was never going to be a quick signing with Boras as his agent. We could have thrown the highest offer at him as soon as the lockout ended (like we did with Grandal at the start of the 2020 offseason), and he wouldn’t have jumped on it like Grandal did.

I think Bummer will bounce back nicely. He was definitely inconsistent and had trouble commanding the zone at times, but he was the unluckiest pitcher I’ve ever seen last year. I’ve never seen so many ground balls deflecting off of gloves or seeing eye singles.

Any idea what he would cost?

Is John Means a possible trade target? Or would he cost too much given the three years of control he still has?

So assuming it’s only a matter of time that Kimbrel gets moved, we have $38M to play with still. Even if we have to eat some of Kimbrel’s salary, that’s still over $30M to play with.

I meant at this point in time. We can’t reverse the Kimbrel trade at this point. And Harrison was a 2 WAR guy last year. He’s exactly the bargain-bin decent player that people wanted at 2B. Baez for 6 years and $140M would have been an awful signing. Sure, Story would be nice, but he won’t be cheap and he probably wants to play SS.

Which 2B wouldn’t be stupid?

I’m so confused. Seems like a lot of people had an off-season plan of signing a solid RF (Conforto) and then a bargain-bin 2B. So why does everyone hate this move? Is it because it came first? If we signed Conforto first and then made this move, would everyone be ok with it?

I think the Sox know more about his health and/or work ethic than any other team, and Hahn just wanted to move on. Even if there was only a 5% chance of Rodon taking the QO, he didn’t want to take that risk. I think Hahn has a plan for the starting rotation, and on the off chance Rodon takes the QO, that plan gets blown up.

Yeah, the fact that Kimbrel will only be a 1 year deal is why I think somebody will take him.

If I needed a closer, then yes.

If they can’t get a good return for Kimbrel, then they will basically “decline his option” by shipping him out for a non-prospect. What’s the risk? Is there really a chance that nobody will take him for free? (By free, I mean giving up no real prospects and just taking on the contract)

At worst, you just unload him for a nobody prospect, right? Then it would have just been like you didn’t pick up the option.

I agree 100% that we better make some moves (and I think we will). But I’m not so sure our team on paper right now is worse than our on team on paper going into last year. On paper, Kopech looks so much better than Rodon did for the last rotation spot. Cease looks better going into this year, but Keuchel looked better going into last year. And I like Vaughn on paper going into this year much better than I liked him going into last year (and I was even higher on him than most).
