    It would be so White Sox for a player to get gangrene. And, not surprisingly, it actually happened to the Sox before. Monty Stratton A pitcher for the Chicago White Sox in the 1930s, Stratton accidentally shot himself in the leg while hunting in 1938. The bullet severed an artery behind his right knee, and despite medical efforts, gangrene set in, necessitating the amputation of his leg above the knee. Remarkably, Stratton made a comeback, pitching in the minor leagues with a prosthetic leg.
