Sox ERA was close to 1.5 better with McCann behind the plate. Oh well he’s gone now.

Old: Mega Hendriks Speculation Thread

Australians don't actually drink fosters. They just dump it on the rest of the world -
That's when they trade Yermin for Wheeler
-
The regular roster size is 26. Expanded was 28
-
The lineup is full but the roster isn't. Vaughn situation hasn't changed since the Sox said what their off season targets were, I don't see any reason why that would haved changed. With Vaughn you have nine guys plus Leury and Engel. Add a catcher. That still leaves room for another bat.

How do you figure?

Sox acquire Lance Lynn for Dane Dunning and Avery Weems

You don't consider a shoulder tear an arm injury? -
RP, 2 SP, RF and left handed bat were the stated plan. No reason to think that still isn't the case when two of those are checked off at budget prices. That leaves RP, SP and another bat.

Sox sign Adam Eaton 1 year, $7m plus option
Vulture replied to Greek-konerko's topic in Pale Hose Talk
He already returned to health. The first year was in the injury, which limited him to 90 some games the following year, he had a full year the third year and last year was covid. In any full year he is probably somewhere around a 3 WAR player. Saying he's one war player just isn't accurate. -

I wonder if La Russa will continue the tradition of having Cordero face 33% more batters than each of our top five relievers -

Hendriks has clearly been the best reliever, but that chart is another demonstration of fangraphs idiotic war formulas. Only in fangraph's crazed world did Joakim Soria, Hansel Robles, Wander Sueno, Raisel Iglesias, etc out perform Colome in that period, and I'll take that to the bank -

Fair enough, but it isn't a bit contradictory saying the Sox are unlikeable because they added two guys you consider ass holes if you are an ass hole yourself? -

So you're an ass hole superior to other ass holes. Got it -

Except three of those years amounted to about one year of playing time. -
Sox sign Adam Eaton 1 year, $7m plus option

Its simple math. I don't see what's so controversial about it. There is a yearly budget, whatever it may be. One year deals don't effect the future yearly budgets, so why would they have any relation to them. Maybe the yearly budget is already maxed out for '22-23, in which case there would be no signing either way. -

Not saying they're going to sign Springer. My point is Eaton and Lynn's one year contracts only brings them close but still a few million less in payroll in '21 than is already projected for '22-23, so any contract they can afford to sign over that span is virtually unaffected by both Lynn and Eaton's contracts. If they can afford an multiyear contract over '22-23 they can afford it in '21, no matter how they spend the approximately 20 million difference for one year. Therefore their one year deals have no effect on any multi year deals the Sox may or may not be able to sign. If that's the case, then it does make sense to go out and get the one year guys first, when there are only a couple of guys that fit what you want on available for only one year. Hahn already stated they want a RFer and a bench bat who can DH. With Eaton, you have one or the other, so its not getting in the way of any further deals either way. Or if you want to sign a big free agent pitcher, or whatever it is it may be. -

Theoretically it has no effect on any multi year offers. Eaton and Lynn's salaries bring '21 baseline payrolls closer to the already existing baseline of '22-23 payrolls, so even if you added Springer at 25 mil per year, or any other multi year deal, '21 payroll would still be several million less than projected 22-23 when eaton and lynn come off the books. With Eaton and Lynn, projected payroll is at about 125 million in '21, while projected '22-23 without them is already at 125-130 range each year. So if you're looking at any three plus year deals you're still in the same range of projected payroll over that span. Then after '23 Grandal and Keuchel are off the books. -

Oh garsh, wow. Hold the presses -
You never know. Plenty of guys with Quintana's trajectories bounce back and have good years in 32-37 age range, plenty just continue to fall into obscurity. One thing he has going for him, he knows how to pitch. Possible he could adjust. Wouldn't exactly be shocking if he had a couple 3-5 WAR seasons left in the tank. Purely antedotal but the times I saw him pitch in '20, he looked sharp to me.
-
I already took that into account. I don't really see that fat in the guaranteed salaries or arb eligible players either. Escalating contract salaries and arb players, for example, already make up for the loss of Abreu's salary between '22-23. The baseline payroll is in fact approximately 25-30 million more in '22-23 than it was in '21 prior to signing of Eaton and addition of Lynn. Lynn and Eaton basically bring '21 baseline closer to '22-23.. Anderson, Jimenez, Robert, Moncada and Bummer all have escalating contracts, gio will be in year three arb, cease, kopech and more will be in arb, etc. Any fat would be among the low level arb players who won't be making much anyway.

Arb is probably going to bring it to around 110 million or slightly less, plus 15 for Eaton/Lynn about 125. I think Gio is the only one looking at a substantial sum but in first year probably not too crazy. '22-23 is when it starts to become more of a concern with escalating contracts to Anderson, Jimenez, Robert and more arb. If you assume a decline on Eaton, baseline closer to 125-130 mil in those years as it already stands. Of course we don't know what the payroll limitations actually are, so who knows anyway -

Eaton's obviously not many's top choice, but Eaton/Engel is clearly far superior to Leury/Engel. Leury is a pretty good utility infielder. If we've still got him playing OF in '21 when we're supposed to be going for the pennant, that is a far bigger problem than Eaton. Only reason to have Leury in the out field is lack of depth, as was the case the last couple years. -
Yeah I don't get why these other pitchers mentioned in this thread don't have as many or more caveats as Q. Richards hasn't been able to stay healthy in more than five years, Kluber is an aged arm looking to rebound who has had arm troubles keeping him out the past two years, etc. At least Q's arm is sound. Just keep him away from the electric can openers. Id rather take my chances on Sugano. This guy is a horse who can go deep into games every time out. If not, Quintana is as good an option as any on FA market imo
