New BA article on Chris Young
QUOTE(JimH @ Jul 12, 2005 -> 09:57 AM) Great info, thanks for posting it. One thing the article didn't mention on Young ... his arm. As I understand it that's always been a drawback. However, watching him closely in Tucson, I didn't get the impression his arm was way below average. He doesn't have the cannon Sweeney has but it looked at least average to me. Well, one thing for sure ... when these other team's scouts are looking at White Sox prospects, you can bet they're looking at Chris Young. I would love to hang onto all these kids but I don't think it's possible. It was very interesting to note how his strikeout rate has slowed down. That's critical, it shows he's making adjustments. I only got to see him make one throw in the Futures game, but I would say his arm is average. I was expecting a noodle arm, so I was actually impressed that it wasn't that bad.

Baseball/Softball dropped from Olympics
That's great, Zambrano would also be the 4th best hitter on the team. They wouldn't win anything.

With MB starting ASG, will Garland be last?
QUOTE(VAfan @ Jul 11, 2005 -> 07:20 PM) Since Buehrle and Garland are both starters on the same team, if I was Francona I would hold Garland as my last pitcher and use him only if the game goes extra innings. It is no reflection on Garland's abilities, but it is probably the right thing to do. I would think that Clement might be the last option.

Soxtalk Book Club
I recommended the Buzz Bissinger book for August, but I went to put it on hold at the library, and I came to the conclusion that we might wanna choose a different book. Not only was I like 15th on the waiting list, but I think it's only available in hardback. That means like $20+ for you college kids out there. That's not chump change... Should we change it?

Boone to Minnesota (Official)
QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Jul 11, 2005 -> 06:02 PM) Addition by subtraction (of Luis Rivas). Okay move, nothing to worry too much about. But if they're using leftover salary space on Boone, that's a pretty good sign. The salary is a pro-rated minimum. so something along the lines of 150K. Nothing that a major league ballclub should worry about. (It's less than the Sox have to pay out in all-star bonuses over the next two years now)

The Gooch
QUOTE(3E8 @ Jul 11, 2005 -> 03:19 PM) It's probably a combination of giving himself up so many times and the scouting report calling for breaking balls in the dirt. Yeah, he's seeing more breaking balls. It was clear early that he wasn't picking them up very well. He's still not. That being said, on friday I was concerned. He had a declining OBP, and I thought he was dragging down the offense. Then I saw Willie Harris play. -- The numbers don't tell you what Tads is doing out there. He is a great player.

Awful series by Ozzie
QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Jul 10, 2005 -> 06:03 PM) I didn't see enough of the series to say much but what was with having Willie pinch run for Carl, AFTER you had Carl bunted over to second. If you want to pinch run, do it right away. Maybe we could have had Willie steal and then get sacrificed over to have one out and a man on third. Kind of a brain cramp there in my opinion. Correct. This, and not removing Cotts (Something is wrong there. Not only was his control not there. He didn't top 90 MPH. Part of his improvement this season is because he's added about 2MPH to his fastball, to 91-93MPH. I hope he's not hurt or something. There's three days off at the right time though, I suppose.) when he looked terrible were really the only boneheaded moves I saw.

2005 All-Star "Futures" Game Thread
QUOTE(danman31 @ Jul 10, 2005 -> 03:46 PM) Young to face Yusmeiro Petit of the Mets. First pitch strike looking. Foul off to the right side. Pop up to 2nd baseman. Well that at-bat sucked. He grounded to third in his second AB. He almost made it to 2nd before that pop up came down.

3 Way trade????
QUOTE(JimH @ Jul 9, 2005 -> 01:11 PM) Could be, but I think this board has a natural and somewhat likeable tendancy to overrate Chris Young and other prospects. Not raining on a parade here but Chris Young strikes out a lot and a big hole in the swing tends to get exploited. I can understand this, but there's no way I deal Young this season. I can live with Young's 'hole in his swing' being expoited in our organization next year. I can't live with him hitting 35 HRs for someone else at AAA next year, and hitting 40 for another major league team in the not too distant future. He's just starting to show what he's capable of. 60% of his hits are for Xtra bases! He's still under the radar as far as not being listed as a top 100 prospect. Trading him this year would be the equivalent of trading McCarthy last year at the break, who I'd be fine dealing this year. -- I know what we have there. I have a better idea of what he's capable of. -- Next year if Young is continuing to pound the ball, he will be on the untouchables list. I might be open to trading him then, after we've got a better idea of what he can do at the higher levels, but not now.
