9/9 Indians (Gomez) at White Sox (Buehrle)

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Sep 10, 2011 -> 06:15 AM) I saw those guys too. 1967 and earlier was some pitching staff for the Sox. 1967 is when Joel Horlen was robbed of the Cy Young and they gave it to Jim Lonborg just because Boston was the AL, But, Mark Buerhle is pretty special too Mark is way more consistent than those guys. Tommy John was better, but not when he was a Sox. -

If we have a season like the Cubs are having there will be NO interest. That's what happens when you fall 10 or more back in June. I haven't heard a fricking word about the Cubs in months. Though admittedly i dont read the Trib or SunTimes much. -

QUOTE (mcgrad70 @ Sep 10, 2011 -> 03:03 AM) I know he's beloved but his two no-hitters aside, this guy ain't no ace. I was blessed to have seen Gary Peters, Tommy John, Joel Horlen and Wilbur Wood pitch for the Sox. If your measure of an ace-like pitcher is Mark, you didn't see these guys. Are you kidding me? Mark has had a better Sox career than any of those guys. I don't understand this negativity surrounding Sox legends sometimes. Mark gets hit sometimes but any team would be lucky to have him. I think it's safe to say Mark Buehrle has had a WAY BETTER career than any of those guys you mentioned. Chubby Wilbur got guys out but he also got hit hard a lot as well. Whether he's an 'ace' or not, who cares? he's great. -
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 9, 2011 -> 11:19 PM) Name one, Mr Broadbrush You haven't read the threads where people are penciling in Rios for next year's outfield and have no problem doing so as they expect a return to the normal numbers for him? Posters have said they hope and/or expect him to return to 2009 stats or whenever he had a 'good' year for us. I won't go through all the posts but if you start a Rios thread I'm sure those people will surface again. There are those not giving up on Rios being a good player. Some love his tools. To the Juan haters ... Hibbard made a good point that at least the guy gives us some speed as well. He may not steal bases but he actually can go first to third and score from second on a single. I NEVER said I want him back; just that he is a good baseball player. I do NOT think Rios is a good player. I do think Quentin is a good player. And signs are DeAza may be a good player thus the outfield of Tank, DeAza, CQ for the future even though we'll still be lacking speed in 2 of those 3 players.

QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Sep 9, 2011 -> 08:49 PM) You're welcome. I tend to think there is some value in a player who has a high batting average. QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Sep 9, 2011 -> 08:51 PM) It's responses like this that make threads like this utterly ridiculous. I never said anything like this. I believe Pierre is an above average hitter, whose speed makes him a decent asset if the middle of the lineup is working properly. I don't believe he merits the continuous bashing he receives by the same five people who resort to childish tactics to make their points. 1.) So do I. The announcers I listen to also tend to mention batting average, uh, every time a player steps in the box. No announcers I've heard mention the advanced sabes stuff. Maybe on base percentage once in a while or some put that graphic on the screen. 2.) I agree with that post. The basis of people getting mad at me is my simple statement, which I stand by, saying Juan Pierre is a good baseball player. I think he is. I also find it so funny that many can't forgive him for getting off to a slow start when other players' slow starts are shrugged off. There are still people on this board who think Rios is a good baseball player.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Sep 9, 2011 -> 07:40 PM) He's 11th in the AL in hits while being 8th in at bats, so no, it literally does nothing to help your argument. Tangible fact: He's 11th in hits. Who cares how many at bats he has? He' s also still hitting about .280 isn't he? That's also "good" in most people's minds. I'm not saying he's Ricky Henderson in his prime. I'm saying Juan is a "good" baseball player. You'd think I was calling him King of the Hill. To me, 11th in hits is pretty damn good and if you throw in the at bats, it still comes out to a "good" batting average. If Adam was eighth in at bats he'd probably be hitting .035.

QUOTE (Greg Hibbard @ Sep 9, 2011 -> 07:15 PM) I'm sure we all appreciate that you are an important man, to catch a flight after you resort to name-calling and degradation in order to make your points, rather than taking the time to actually look up data and back the s*** you claim up. If the usual loonies are the ones who actually do research to back up their opinions rather than just insult people, then yes, I think I'd rather listen to them. Since Milk likes to congratulate those who nail me to the wall in posts, I'd like to cite Hibbard. Great stuff!

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Sep 9, 2011 -> 07:07 PM) You are the ultimate cherry picker. And yes, I exaggerated for effect. He can't steal like he used to anymore. Come up with whatever garbage you have to refute that, nobody but the usual loonies are going to believe you. I have to go catch a flight. You all have a good weekend. Juan is 11th overall in hits? Nice. I will say this about Milkman ... he is very tough to beat on a message board and his posts often make it seem like he wants desperately to "win" arguments. He calls me a troll and flicks me away like a fly on his collar as if I cared. Since I disagree with him, I'm a minor pest to be flicked away with one sentence here or there. To his credit, he knows the ways to pick out one sentence here or there to attack and in his mind, "win" the argument. He says "I exaggerated for effect." That's the type of line I'm talking about that works so well for Milk on the anonymous Internet. Oh, sure, you get called on something and u just simply say you exaggerated for effect. Masterful! Milk appears to me to be the kind of guy (poster) who just doesn't want to deal with anybody who disagrees with him. I'm the type of person (poster) who reads others arguments then restates my own. Milk ... it's OK if people disagree in life. Didn't mama ever tell you life would be boring if everybody agreed on everthing?? And I mispelled everything on purpose for you. As far as Juan, nice to know he's 11th in the league in hits. I state again that helps my argument that he's a good baseball player.

I'd keep Morel for his glove, but I can definitely understand why people would be upset with his season. As far as All-In, it was a stupid slogan/idea. Because of their salaries, Dunn and Rios and Peavy are the main reasons you might think Sox were "All-In." They might as well try the same slogan next year. They can say whatever they want in ad departments.
-
QUOTE (chw42 @ Sep 9, 2011 -> 04:54 AM) Oh please let that happen. You can go with them if you want. And yes, we hate Juan Pierre because we are jealous. So very jealous. I would love $9 million a year to play baseball. At least he appears to try to earn his $9 million through hard work. One might question the same devotion in somebody like Dunn, who to the naked eye appears overweight, and Rios, who loafs.
-
Nice thread. Did you see the postgame interview? How can you not like Juan Pierre? Total class. His 2,000th hit was a nice one for him to remember. A hard hit single. Sometimes I think people are jealous of guys like little Juan. He has no power but through hard work and getting the most out of his ability, he's had a very very nice career. I hope Oz brings him to Florida with him and he has another good year. He has no pop (though I do recall watching him blast 2 homers this year just nine less than worthless Dunn), and he's lost his ability to swipe bases like Rock Raines did as well, but you have to love the little fella.

QUOTE (VictoryMC98 @ Sep 9, 2011 -> 01:49 AM) Or might have a bias for looking for a scapegoat, every fan of their team when it goes bad blames the manager, sometimes it is justified.. and IMO in this case it is not. My #1 fear, we fire Ozzie, 2012.. Same problems... Which means it was a bad team from the GM, so we have to fire the GM.. And now we hire a new GM who wants to bring in his own manager.. Which means we don't get to the playoffs for the next 3-4 years...at best. Only good thing, we get some decent draft picks. Amen. Blame the quarterback. Blame the manager. As far as the other posts ... the piling on is weird. You say I can't think for myself. How can you say that, Big Hurt? You think I just think what others think?? I like Jenks. I like Juan. I like Wise. I like Ozzie. So shoot me, but I like the four of them. How's that not thinking for myself? I also liked Pods. All have pretty much been buried on here. I wanted to see what others outside of this board thought of Ozzie so I asked a few. They think he's fine and don't really understand the furor. We have a lot of s***ty underperforming millionaire players. Some of you even blame Ozzie for that. Really? Ozzie couldn't fire up Dunn or Rios so it's Oz's fault? Yuk. My point was meant to be that look for a lot of confused people if we fire Ozzie.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 8, 2011 -> 09:05 PM) Did you also solicit feedback on your opinion that Juan Pierre is a very good player? QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Sep 8, 2011 -> 09:20 PM) It's like saying a guy was employee of the month once, but in the year since he's been late 6 times, called off 5 times, and been asleep at his desk a few times...oh, and he makes an ass of himself with loud, obnoxious behavior with customers. But, you know, that employee of the month plaque buys him more time. Give me a break. 1.) Not yet. Good idea tho. 2.) Some of you guys act like Ozzie is this big buffoon of a manager like Bevington. I can't believe how some of you think he's the scum of the earth as a manager when he's actually good, or at least average. Some act like he is Bevington.

Fair enough discussion on Pierre in the last 2 posts. I won't ask the follow up question I now was going to ask. I'll let it die.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Sep 8, 2011 -> 04:40 PM) Yeah, he doesn't really specify if he was just chatting with some friends of his on-line or if he actually went out and asked around. I never know with him. Either way, whoever he talked to apparently agreed with him. Now he's using that as some kinda parameter as to why Ozzie is not as bad as Soxtalk makes him out to be. That's unquestionably ridiculous. I asked some Royals fans I know about Ozzie. Some of them are sabes people. All of them thought it out of the realm of possibility fans want him fired. One guy said he probably should be on the hot seat if they suck next year but the WS title still should bide him some time and our players are overrated.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 8, 2011 -> 04:57 PM) No, you ignore stats that people show you and rely only on your own eye test and what "other people that you know that are not on this site" tell you. Dont act like people dont back up their points on this site. The only person who I consistently see that makes points and consistently fails to back them up with any form of statistical analysis is YOU. You also make broad generalizations of what people say on this site. Nobody said Quentin sucks. Pretty much everyone here agrees that Quentin is an injury liability, he is due for a big payday, and is far too streaky to pay him the big bucks that he is going to be asking for. So, these same people agree that he is someone who should be put on the trading block to get value for him before he goes to the open market. I am sorry you dont understand that part of the business, but that is all it is. Business QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Sep 8, 2011 -> 05:56 PM) Greg/elrockinMT bash on other posters in complete hypocritical post They get called out by other posters/mods They ignore such posts Repeat So is he or is he not a "good" ballplayer? I said he is and again there's been a lot of Juan hate on here talking about his "empty" accomplishment. Kylie I think you've lost it. I've read the stats on Juan people post. I can assess them and still in my mind come up with the conclusion he's a "good ballplayer." I read the stats people put on here and am glad to see them. People on this site turn the arguments around when I ask a simple question. Who on this team IS a good ballplayer? I was told Juan is not a good ballplayer and neither is CQ. Paulie is good I was told. Somebody thought Lexi is a good ballplayer. Some of the pitchers I was told are "good." It's not my fault this site doesn't wanna talk about generalities as I do. Is he a good ballplayer or not? When I see the answer is "no," yes I think that's a hater of Juan.
-
QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Sep 8, 2011 -> 12:19 PM) He doesn't get nearly as much hate as you proclaim. Early in the season; when he couldn't hit, got caught stealing 94.2% of the time, and dropped some crucial fly balls; he was hated on (and rightfully so). He's been decent since then. He deserves the recognition for 2000 hits, and he will get it. And why would you challenge anyone to start a thread? Why don't you just start a thread when he gets his 2000th hit? He doesn't? I got jumped for calling him a "good" ballplayer. You can't even get people on here to admit he's "good." Of course I then asked for the definition of good and Quentin wasn't good either.
-
QUOTE (chw42 @ Sep 8, 2011 -> 05:22 AM) Doesn't matter what we think, you'll insist he should stay anyways. My "insisting" won't help keep him. I was wondering if the papers are hinting there's a chance he'll be back.
-
QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Sep 8, 2011 -> 05:12 AM) hahaha, so track records only matter when it suits your argument? You aren't at all concerned that the 2 would be average?
-
Do you guys think there's any way Ozzie returns?
-
QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Sep 7, 2011 -> 08:41 PM) I wouldn't rule it out if he signs for under $3M. After watching him get thrown out he's either lost a major step from 1st to 2nd or he's tipping when he's going to steal. De Aza and Viciedo can't stay in the minors forever. If either once doesn't meet expectations it's still not the epic fail like Anderson and Fields. If he comes back, that's not good. He had a nice year, but he's not the answer to our offensive woes. We need upgrades somewhere and the outfield SHOULD be CQ, DeAza and Tank with Rios as the sub. Rios could play two or three times a week to keep his interest. Sub for each of the three once a week? But Juan doesn't have enough pop on a team that needs a better hitting outfield.
-
It's dangerous to think Humber and Stewart are great options. Are they just Kyle Davies clones as we enter an era where we are the new Royals? No offense to them. They've been great, but they could open next season throwing BP. They have no track record of greatness.
-
I've been talking to a lot of baseball fans outside of Chicago and ask them what their perception is of Ozzie Guillen. They all say that he is a good manager. I ask them all if they can understand why a message board I frequent wants him fired and believes he will be fired. They say, 'No.' If we finish .500, folks, Ozzie being fired will be perceived as unfair nationally.

I hate the "wait til next year" mentality. This team will suck next year as it did this year ... w/out some major changes personnel wise.
