Walker May Retire -- according to the Sun Times
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 21, 2010 -> 09:41 PM) I was referring to greg's overall attitude that as long as someone has a Sox jersey on they're infallible (with the exception of Mark Teahen and Manny). Or Linebrink. Or Pena. Or Juan Pierre. Or Putz when he's sucking (he's not criticism-free to me unlike the majority of the board) or Rios (though I let fathom do the Rios bashing since nobody else will say an ill word ever about Rios). Are those enough examples for you since you brought it up?

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 21, 2010 -> 10:30 PM) Most managers don't make a lot of money, unless they're Torre or LaRussa. Ozzie made $1.1 mill in 2007, and I'm sure he's seen his yearly salary increase slightly each year, so he's probably making around $1.5 mill now a days from the Sox and would need a pay increase to go to Florida, which is simple economics (unless he values being close to Ozney more than money). Fredi Gonzalez, who was just fired this year, signed a 3 year deal for around $2 mill, which is under $700K per season. Do you really think the Marlins would want to almost triple the amount of money they are paying their manager? That's money they then can't spend on their first round pick, and they'd probably end up drafting a guy because he is signable. And either way, just because Soxtalk doesn't like Ozzie doesn't mean the people in charge hate him. There was hearsay earlier this year that suggested that Williams wanted to fire Ozzie but had that decision vetoed by Reinsdorf. Reinsdorf likes Ozzie. He won't want him to go anywhere else. Fair enough soxfan. I figure Florida actually would give Ozzie the same amount as he makes here. He'd be an important addition to the team considering his history down there. Again, I get desensetized on here as to anybody with the Sox thinking Ozzie is worth anything. I figure they'd welcome him leaving on his own. I mean according to this board, he's pretty horses***.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 21, 2010 -> 10:30 PM) According to greg775 as long as the hitting coach is employed by the White Sox that makes him automatically awesome. Comment on Badger's post, not mine. Please. You don't think he made great points?

Manny Should Just Retire...
QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Sep 21, 2010 -> 12:26 PM) I'd say getting swept by the Twins and Tigers at home was the exclamation point on this season. KW took a chance with Manny, and it didn't pan out. The Sox were only 4.5 games out when he was acquired, but I don't think many of us thought that acquring Manny alone would push the team to the playoffs. Remember that the Sox had a 7 game winning streak right after he was acquired. Granted he didn't really do anything during that time except watch a couple game-winning home runs from the on-deck circle. Then the team just fell apart...mainly the starting pitching. 4.5 really is a lot of games when you are trying to catch Minnesota. I see this season as simply we erased the 9.5 game deficit and at that point we needed to start anew. Sox were granted a miraculous do-over at that point. By starting anew I mean again addressing some team needs. Sox stood pat. Sox floundered and now are in total freefall. By the time we fell 4.5 back, we were toast. The Twins had regained what they had lost.

Don't tease me Trib...
QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Sep 21, 2010 -> 08:51 PM) It has nothing to do with babysitting the young men. Yes, we know they are adults. The issue is that LaRussa is a careless individual. If he isn't sober now, then based on his DUI there's no telling what he is capable of. Why the hell wouldn't he do it again? He obviously has no problem getting overserved and driving. He can't control his own life and you want him to manage young, impressionable men? I don't want to talk about this but I guess we HAVE to because the fact that he's like 70 years old isn't enough evidence to stop this discussion. LaRussa for manager....really???? Good Lord, how is that man the future of the WhiteSox? Please explain. I don't want LaRussa. How bout Torre. We need an elder statesman type next time around.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Sep 21, 2010 -> 09:53 PM) Thanks Greg, Contrary to popular belief a coach is only as good as his players. From all accounts you were hard working and tried to instill some better fundamentals into the Sox players. Sox offense did better than expected this year, so I guess its one of those, grass is always greener. Hopefully you stick around the organization in some capacity and the Sox are able to find a new hitting coach. As usual, amen Badger, the voice of reason in a fire everybody world.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 21, 2010 -> 06:38 AM) Why would the Marlins offer him a job? They are a notoriously cheap organization looking to save a buck in any manner they can. To hire Ozzie, they'd have to either get permission from the White Sox or, similar to what the Rays did with Lou Piniella, "trade" for Ozzie Guillen. Do you really think the White Sox would "trade" Ozzie Guillen to the Marlins? What you are suggesting is absurd, and if Ozzie Guillen becomes the manager of the Marlins, it will be because he was fired. He can't just leave and go to the Marlins or he will be taken to court by the White Sox for breach of contract. Maybe it's from reading Soxtalk so much but my feeling was the Sox would let him go cause he's so worthless. I never even thought the Sox would want compensation. I figure after reading Soxtalk every day, they'd welcome somebody taking Ozzie off their hands and then they could get LaRussa or Torre. As far as money, don't all managers make about the same amount of loot? They can afford Ozzie.

Manny Should Just Retire...
The acquisition of Manny was the exclamation point to this rotten season, not to mention the season-ending losing streak.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Sep 21, 2010 -> 04:24 AM) Based on one article 2 months ago??? And the fact it makes sense. It's obvious the Marlins will offer Ozzie. Why wouldn't he take it? Much more peaceful down there where nobody cares bout baseball. And he'll get his NL ball all he wants.

Sox vs. A's
QUOTE (mcgrad70 @ Sep 21, 2010 -> 05:52 AM) Third place here we come. This team may not win another game until spring training. How do you Ozziepologists like your boy now? I don't think he's to blame. This has been one of the saddest seasons ever. WTF was that 25-5 all about?? What a sad sack team. We are 11 out. Blowout city.

Manny Should Just Retire...
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 21, 2010 -> 01:04 AM) When Manny WAS Manny, he didn't need 3 weeks and there is no way KW would have claimed him if he thought Manny needed anything longer than a week. What's with this timing stuff? Excuses for Manny?

Sox vs. A's
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Sep 21, 2010 -> 01:12 AM) A part of me is kinda interested to see us go into the kind of tailspin that somebody has to take a fall for. I really think Oz is gone after this season. It all makes too much sense. He's off to Florida where he can work in the NL. He'll love Florida and nobody cares about baseball there so he'll be much more calm. Sox will get LaRussa likely; Torre if they can offer him huge bucks and if LaRussa doesn't want to leave St. Looie.

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Sep 20, 2010 -> 08:17 PM) I can't imagine any scenario that brings Torre here. Otherwise, how do many of us take Ozzie for granted? I don't think you want me to list all the reasons I think people take Ozzie for granted. But I can list them all if people want.

September Catch-All Thread
I think you guys take Ozzie for granted, but you will get your wish. In my mind, I think this is playing out it's 90-10 he's gone to Florida. So the question is, who does Jerry turn to for next season? Is it simply going to be Cora, or does he go for Torre? I would prefer Torre. No guarantees we'll win s***, but after the volatile Oz, we probably need to go calmer and then after he retires at 70, we can go back to Oz, hopefully with a successful 10 years of Torre under our belts. Problem is Jerry will really have to pay big bucks to get Torre. Huge bucks.

Manny Should Just Retire...
QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Sep 20, 2010 -> 05:09 PM) I don't think Manny is done yet. He just have to get his timing back. You could tell he was pressing at the plate. I'm not saying that I'd want to definitely have him back next year (I don't think it would bother me all that much), but I believe that wherever he goes, he will mash again... as long as he can stay healthy. I don't understand why Manny gets this free pass about his "timing" not being there. I mean WTF? He's a veteran. And pressing at the plate? Again WTF. He's been at the plate many many pressure situations before. He's just not very good. He gets a big fat FAIL for his time in Chicago. Not to say he won't rock next year. Now that he's a former Sox I hope he does his rocking somewhere in the NL or AL West.

QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Sep 20, 2010 -> 03:49 PM) Why can't Ozzie just keep his mouth shut? I agree, this team has to get past the damn soap opera that is KW and Ozzie. It's obvious he wants the Florida job and many of you will get your wish for a new manager. It's actually a good way for Ozzie to come back someday. Take another job now, turn Florida into a perennial playoff team, then come back to Chicago again when he needs a dose of hero worship at age 55 or so.. If he stays here much longer he will get fired as all managers are hired to be fired. Only way to come back to Chicago will be to take another job then come back again someday. It'll be tough to come back to the Sox some day if he's fired by the Sox now. He'll enjoy the Florida weather much. It's weird he wants to manage NL type baseball so much since he played for the Sox for so long in the AL. I wonder who gets the Sox job: LaRussa or Torre?

QUOTE (kwolf68 @ Sep 20, 2010 -> 04:40 AM) Our GM. I still can't figure what on earth Williams was thinking bringing him in. As I've said numerous times...Kenny has TOTALLY lost his touch. Either that or he got really lucky before 2005. Since then, he hasn't done jack crap and all too often he obtains players that 'make no sense', very often giving up far too much value in return. I haven't liked a Williams trade since who knows when. I liked the Garcia to Philly trade, that was the last one I liked. A lot of people on this board didn't mind the acquisition. I got roasted last offseason for blasting the deal repeatedly.

QUOTE (Real @ Sep 20, 2010 -> 04:38 AM) If you're dangling Danks or Floyd, someone will probably take his contract just as a "Ok, whatever. Where do I sign" Man I wouldn't be so confident of that. Nobody's going to want that piece of s*** baseball player. He is a fine person, though. I don't dispute that.

I'm not going to give in to the "Manny should retire" "He sucks" "dump him" cult around here. 1.) I want us to win every game. It's a flaw in my fandom. I seek wins. 2.) I resent you calling it a cult when my Jenks love was criticized roundly and I was in a one-man cult I guess. Your love of Manny is as perplexing as my love for Bobby (to some).
