  1. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jan 8, 2018 -> 02:39 PM) Greg’s line of reasoning makes no logical sense, and it’s frustrating to hear him consistently ignore repeated attempts to explain what everyone else is talking about, but I don’t think he’s trolling here. I don’t think he’s said much that’s overly antagonistic, at least not at first. There are many times when he has been out of line, but this isn’t one of them. Thanks. I thought it only logical to inform everybody what the peeps in KC were saying about finally getting rid of Soria. If the stats don't prove me right, fine, but I do think it's significant the guy blew 7 saves. It makes the home fans believe he's worthless and he's definitely the scapegoat in KC. Again if the stats don't back me up, whatever. My eye test told me Fathom could line doubles off Joaquim Soria last season.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 02:14 AM) He could have made a ton of money holding a clipboard on Sundays. Ask Mike Glennon. You make a good point. Best job in the world is backup quarterback as long as you don't play. Again, the concussion thing is too serious.
  3. QUOTE (Sleepy Harold @ Jan 6, 2018 -> 10:53 PM) BTW, David Robertson blew 7 saves in BOTH 2015 & 2016 with the Sox and Jenks blew 6 in 2009, which isn't 7 but damn close, so they both must have had terrible seasons despite what the statistics may say right? According to this board they both were awful. I defended Jenks day after day on here and got killed for it. Ditto Robertson. He was a whipping boy on here in 2015 and I said he was fine.
  4. QUOTE (2005thxfrthmmrs @ Jan 6, 2018 -> 03:43 PM) Dang Greg, let me see if I understand you here. You WERE planning to get MLB TV but now that the Sox have added two relievers better than Albuquerque and Covey and who won't make you cringe as much without giving up any MLB talent, you are deciding you aren't watching the Sox next year? I am a little lost. You guys are too buried in stats and have to discuss the human element. Picture greg watching a Royals game or driving in the car listening and watching Soria blow 7 saves each of the past two seasons. I'd laugh at the reaction on the talk shows the next day. Soria was that bad in KC. I don't care how much you guys say I'm full of bleep. I know what I see and hear and 7 saves each season are a lot of blown saves. Heaven forbid my guy Bobby Jenks blow 7 saves or even David Robertson who I also liked. Now Soria was great his first stint in KC. His second tenure there they were dying to shed that salary and got rid of him, unfortunately to my team. If somehow he's great again, awesome. Never underestimate Coop. But it's tough for me to think about paying for mlb and seeing Soria come in games. Cause he's been that bad of late. I'm not the devil. I am not rooting for the Sox to lose. Heaven forbid I've been one of the lone voices of fandom (with El Rockin) cheering for the team to win "meaningless" games and not caring about draft picks. Somebody should do a thread ranking and rating all the posters like past years. I am confident at least my passion for the Sox would be recognized. Go Soria! Go Sox!
  5. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 6, 2018 -> 04:05 AM) I think most folks would admit he’s a calculated risk. What people are objecting to is an emotionally-charged aversion to him which belies the objective evidence at hand. What you guys are telling me is you didn't want me to shed some light on the fact KC fans wanted to run Soria out of town last season and blamed him for everything. I should have stifled myself I guess. Everybody from little kids to little ol ladies wanted to run Soria out of Kansas City. I enjoy reading all the stats in these threads. I guess you'll just have to wait and see. Again it doesn't matter cause we are a 60ish win team again so let Soria pitch all he wants. Those of you who root for losses will enjoy seeing him serve up meat ... UNLESS Mr. Coop works magic. ... I'll stop now. But you have to admit you can do a lot of things with stats and apologists have really been trying their best to support Jack with stats in this thread.
  6. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 06:50 PM) Greg I just want to know if you think Soria is better or worse than Al Albuquerque or Dylan Covey. Well I would say he's better than those 2. Those 2 make me cringe. I'm just telling you Soria to a Royals fan is Rios to Greg. If you remember how I despised Rios. Soria is just a gascan. That doesn't mean I mind the trade. The trade is fine since we got that other guy and aren't trying to win anyway. Plus I've said 5 times Coop may fix Soria. I love Coop the grouch. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 07:02 PM) Teams don't give away useful valuable pieces to dump a contract that is reasonable with a guy whose peripherals suggest will be halfway valuable. If Greg is pissed at the trade, I disagree with him. If he just thinks Soria sucks, he has a point. Anything you get from him is gravy, but chances are it won't be much. I just think Soria sucks and can attest to you KC fans are rejoicing at dumping him and that salary. QUOTE (Dunt @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 07:04 PM) 1.) Soria is not unknown, he's literally been in the division since 2007 (with the exception of 2013) 2.) Soria is not awful. His career numbers argue quite the opposite actually. 2.86 ERA, 3.07 FIP, 3.28 xFIP, 9.62 K/9, 2.71 BB/9, 204 S over 573 IP. Prettay, prettay good. 3.) Can you please provide us with some first hand accounts of Soria being a bad clubhouse guy? I'm sorry about No. 3. I just am repeating what I heard on the talk shows today that he was a bad clubhouse guy. I may be trashing him wrongly there since I don't know the guy. My bad. Forgive me. I'll let you know if the talk shows give better examples. Again I apologize to Jack, his name here given him by Ned. Jack Soria. Please strike that clubhouse thing from the record as I am repeating talk show banter there. Sorry. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 07:46 PM) Every fan base has their whipping boys. These tend to be irrational and based on single instances instead of rational and all encompassing. This sounds like exactly what is happening here. Maybe. I'll give you that. Maybe. As a Sox fan though, I'd laugh watching end of KC games and see Soria simply be unable to get through a half inning without giving up walks, hits and runs. He was really a lousy Royal the second go round. Earlier in his career when KC had him he was good. Now? Ugh he's bad. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Jan 6, 2018 -> 12:30 AM) People just like to b**** and moan or be contratian. I get it to a degree but there's no downside here Peter was never, ever going to contribute in a big role on a Sox team with Moncada at 2B and there is no long term commitment to either of these relievers. Agreed. We're not trying to win so no biggie. My problem is Soria (to me) is so bad he's affecting my decision whether to buy mlb.com or not. I don't need the angst.
  7. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 04:10 PM) Greg, stop. I don't need to ask Caulfield or any dumbass Kansas City goobers s***. You are acting like a clown. I know, I should be used to it by now but I'm trying to catch up on an informative thread and you've hijacked it with nonsense. Geez. I'm just trying to add some context here. I live here and I'm just relaying the relief of Royals fans getting rid of Soria. He was the whipping boy of fans all last year (much like me despising Dunn that one year and me despising Rios, etc) and the talk shows are blazing. Do you guys check Twitter? Type in Soria's name for gosh sakes. I don't like being negative Nancy but I'm just passing along what I KNOW from living here. Soria was booed; Soria was despised; Soria was a bad clubhouse guy; Soria was the scapegoat for all the Royals' bullpen woes. Soria will make me consider whether to buy mlb.com this year cause he will drive me insane UNLESS as I pointed out Coop fixes him. I also said the other reliever we got sounds fine. Read my posts before you guys say I'm totally out of line. Don't you want info passed on? We can't be Sox shills all the time for gosh sakes. Be reasonable. He's awful; Coop easily could fix him. He's so bad greg doesn't want to watch him pitch on mlb.com in a Sox uniform so shoot me. You guys over-react. Read my tweets; they are not that negative since I do bring up Coop. QUOTE (2005thxfrthmmrs @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 04:31 PM) So what you're saying is Greg is trashing Soria for having a really bad 2 weeks. This goes both ways. Some of our players get trashed on here. Like take away two weeks of a hitter's 0 for 30 and the hitter is different. Look, I get it. Sox fans are excited cause he's new, the unknown. I'd love if Soria does what some relievers do and has a good year after a bad one.
  8. QUOTE (ron883 @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 05:29 AM) [politics] whoever edited my post to add that should take a vacation. that's mean.
  9. QUOTE (ChiSox1917 @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 03:12 AM) Soria is not "really bad". He's so bad a city is rejoicing he's gone. I'll stop now but you guys have to calm down about Soria. He's really bad. Ask Caulfield. He has the numbers. If Coop can save him then yes you could 'maybe' flip him. But if Coop can't, I'm surprised you guys who don't seem to want to spend Jerry's money are OK with 9 million going to this guy per season. Here's how bad he is: "Over the last two seasons, Soria had 14 blown saves and a 3.89 ERA. He became a lightning rod for the frustrations of Royals fans, who had become accustomed to unprecedented success from a bullpen combination of Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis and Greg Holland."
  10. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 02:22 AM) Can you please elaborate? I have no idea how his stuff was last year, but his K rate was above his career average and his BB rate wasn’t too much worse. The HR rate obviously appears to be an outlier though. Regardless, the stats seem to be pretty good. Did he blow a bunch of saves or something? If that’s the big problem then I’ll happily role the dice on him as our closer in a rebuilding season. Can I defer your questions to Caulfield? He can explain. He was probably the most despised Royal in KC of the fans. He was that bad. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 02:35 AM) Greg, Soria had a 2.23 FIP last year and striking out over 10 hitters per 9 innings. He was damn good last year. I defer to Caulfield. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 02:37 AM) Greg demands a better major league roster in 2018. Rick Hahn improves the talent roster for the 2018 roster Greg is furious. Sounds about right. The other guy we got sounds fine. QUOTE (CWSpalehoseCWS @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 02:39 AM) Soria comes across as one of those "deceptively good" stats guys. He struggled last year with RISP and high leverage situations. Check out his Fangraph splits, small sample size, but not good by any means. Even so, I don't think there's any reason to freak out over him being on the team. Sox needed pen arms bad. Not a bad post but he's really bad.
  11. QUOTE (Jake @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 01:09 AM) I don't get the pessimism with Soria. He's had one bad year ever and that year was hardly a total s***show by White Sox standards. We're going to get something much nicer than Jake Peter in return for him at the deadline. The pessimism is well founded. he's that bad. Seriously, he may have made the decision for me to not get mlb.com this year. I'll go crazy watching him pitch. Perfect though, again, for those who want one more tank season. He's perfect cause nobody can accuse the Sox of tanking cause he has a name and makes a good buck. But he will get the tank job done. I'm not lying when I say Royals fans are rejoicing. It's better for them than New Year's Rockin Eve.
  12. I am not blasting the trade as it's not contention time yet, but some Tweets from Royals fans. ... Thank god I no longer have to exchange Ffffff Soria texts with my brother while i watch him piss away the lead! Well we just now sent Soria to the South Side of Chicago!! Rejoice!!! SORIA IS GONE FROM THE ROYALS!!!!!! KC ITS TIME TO THROW A PARADE!!! Soria has a truckload of blown saves the last two years. Shipping him to someone that you play 19 times may be worth a few wins. He’s gone!! No more mad Soria tweets ever again!! Best news in a long time!!! Yes the fans here despise Soria. The only hope is Coop might fix him. Coop is that good. If Coop can't fix him he's perfect for those fans who want to make sure we blow leads we might have late in the game to get a better draft pick.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 3, 2018 -> 04:29 AM) Kaepernick has been unable to find employment again because of his protest, so he is just like the average Joe you mentioned protesting at their own work. Kaep probably should be happy he's not playing. The brain injury thing is serious issue and surely he's set for life financially from his previous years in the league.
  14. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jan 5, 2018 -> 01:46 AM) Want to bet the house? Definitely. Surely you are aware of how rotten Soria is.
  15. Soria is a horrific baseball pitcher, but he won't be with the Sox when they contend so no biggie. It will be annoying to see him pitch next season, however, on the South Side. Royals fans are dancing in the streets getting rid of Soria.
  16. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 3, 2018 -> 03:18 PM) greg, I know you won't ever listen, but NK has nuclear weapons as a deterrent, not because they're crazy enough to launch a first-strike against the US. It's the same reason they have tons of artillery pointed at Seoul. "You hit us, we hit you back hard." The world has condemned NK, again and again, and sanctions have been ratcheting up for years. The world is also turning its back on the US and recognizing just how much US leadership has diminished around the world in the past year thanks largely to our goofy idiot cartoon leader, too. Please don't give me any of the North Korean "reasoning" on this matter. Cmon. Kim Jong Un wants continued power, more power. He would definitely launch a nuke at Hawaii or the mainland. You can't even pretend to think Jong Un is reasonable. I concede Trump should not be president but I'm not going to give any benefit of the doubt to the man who has at least a 40/60 chance of ending the world as we know it -- Rodman's buddy Kim.
  17. Guys, Kim Jong Un is a menace. Trump may be a moron but there should be world wide outrage over Jong Un and there isn't. I back Trump on this one while suggesting the end of the world is closer than many think. We may have nuclear war sooner rather than later because of Jong Un. Isn't it oddly weird that a friend of Dennis Rodman will be the one to send some nukes and start the horrific turn of events. I mean Trump sucks and all that but he has to stand up to the turkey in North Korea. They are building nukes for a reason and that reason is to blow us off the map.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Jan 2, 2018 -> 11:01 PM) Not standing at the game is apparently a way to possible get punched as well, so I don't think that criteria you set is consistent. If you are saying you need to stand for the anthem, then stand whether in public or privacy. If you think it's wrong to sit or kneel during the anthem then you should hold yourself to the same standard. It's kind of weird to stand up when alone in your living room and nobody's in the house but yourself. Somebody might accuse you of talking to yourself.
  19. greg775 replied to greg775's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 2, 2018 -> 11:12 PM) Basically many patriotic Americans demand the same freedoms that the North Koreans, Russians, Chinese, and various dictatorial nations have to show their patriotism. Funny how so many Americans talk with pride about all of our freedoms while demanding that they not be exercised. People have the right to do whatever they want. Nobody is saying Colin and the others can't kneel during the anthem. However it doesn't have to be a popular move. Again ... like I said, can the average Joe "protest" while at work? The answer is no. You'd be fired in many lines of work for calling attention to yourself via protest. I support Colin's right to do whatever he wants. I'm saying it's not a great way to protest something in a team sport. You are off on your own island. Why not attack the issue in a more productive way when you are offending military by the method you chose? Also you are protesting on company time so to speak when most people can't lest they be fired?

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 2, 2018 -> 08:25 PM) It’s not a new standard, it’s a standard you are applying to players but not yourself But I stand during the anthem at games just not in private or in bars. I think standing in a bar could get you punched by the way. It'd seem like you are being abnoxious again in drawing attention to yourself. I did not know many people stood in private. That practice of standing alone during the anthem in a house or apartment surprised me that people do it.
  21. greg775 replied to greg775's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 2, 2018 -> 07:59 PM) Personally, if you are watching on TV and they are showing the anthem and you aren't standing, I have no idea how you could complain about someone taking a knee even if their reason for taking a knee is what Fox News wants you to think it is, even though it is not. I didn't know this was something people even considered doing. I don't stand during the anthem in privacy so I guess I am a hypocrite if this is the new standard.

QUOTE (Brian @ Jan 2, 2018 -> 07:59 PM) Greg, I used to kind of feel bad for you because of how hard people come down on you. You just don't get it. Have fun. I added a p.s. to my last post to you BTW. I don't know if you saw it but it should be added to my stance on your situation with your uncle.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 2, 2018 -> 07:40 PM) Hey Greg, when you watch a game on TV and they show the anthem, are you standing at attention or sitting on your couch disrespecting the military? I've watched games with friends, in bars, at houses, and I have never seen one person stand when it was shown on TV. How disrespectful. It doesn't matter the reason the players have for kneeling. It's what Trump and Rush and Hannity want you to believe. That's the real reason. No. I only stand when the anthem is played at the arena/stadium, per tradition and custom and respect and all that. I've never heard that there's a movement to stand in privacy during the anthem. I do not do it so perhaps I am out of line there. I'll have to think about it some more. QUOTE (Brian @ Jan 2, 2018 -> 07:42 PM) THEY AREN'T KNEELING TO PROTEST THE MILITARY!!!! Why is this so fn hard to understand? My uncle, like Trump, repeats what he sees on Fox News and repeats it. He doesn't listen to the people protesting to get their reasoning and can't see the big picture. He disagrees with me without getting the whole story. My uncle says attendance and ratings for the NFL are down because of the kneeling. Gee, wonder where he heard that BS? Rovell tweeted that 20 of the top 30 most watched events on TV last year were NFL games. Yeah, really struggling. Well your uncle could have had an informative discussion with you which I guess was ended by your mom hitting you in the head. I just can't buy some of your arguments about disagreements. You say your uncle repeats what he hears on Fox news. By saying that you are implying he has not thought this out at all. My take from afar is you are another person who can't accept anybody else's position on a matter as perhaps being correct. You say angrily "THEY ARENT KNEELING TO PROTEST THE MILITARY!!!" Yet guess what? They picked a forum of protest that ANGERS and saddens the military. The anthem is their baby so to speak. The anthem represents much to military. Have you seen the pomp and circumstance at an NFL game INVOLVING THE MILITARY and the flag? Guess what else? You are not the only person who has the right to have an opinion. You think you are right. Guess what? You might be wrong. Your uncle has an opinion. Yet instead of considering it? Ah, he got that from Fox news. I'm right. He's wrong. Pass me the ham and turkey please. p.s.: I will say this: The fact your uncle said Kap deserved to be shot is scary and wrong and dangerous. If that's the sole reason you dismissed unc's opinion, then my bad. It sounds like you disagree with more than that stance, however, you also disagree flat out about his anthem stance. But the shooting of Kap comment could make you leave the room and if you are that upset about that comment and believed he was serious, my bad.

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jan 2, 2018 -> 07:35 PM) Question for everyone: if they stopped doing the National Anthem before sporting events, would you care? And why or why not? Great question. I probably would have to think about that some more before stating a final opinion. I know I've been to a lot of sporting events where during the first time out they honor a military member after reading her/his accomplishment(s) in said military and the crowd goes wild with applause, standing ovations and the military person seems to enjoy the fans' reaction. It seems a very special moment for all. Because it's been tradition to play the anthem so long I'd probably like it to remain. however if many of the participants are disgusted by the anthem and what they feel it represents, they should be heard as well regards to their concerns. Great question. I must think about it.
  25. greg775 replied to greg775's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (Quin @ Jan 2, 2018 -> 05:43 PM) What is an acceptable protest for you? As far as for sports figures, having a discussion/forum on a non game day. Bring in some military members and discuss why they would be offended by this. Thoroughly discuss the matter and the fact protesting social issues, as serious as they are, might be unwise on game day. Discuss all sides. Let Kap lead the discussion. What's wrong with a protest that doesn't scream, me, me, me? Again, if an NFL quarterback decides to protest on game day, the entire day has become about one player, or a few more if they join him in protest. It's the wrong avenue for protest IMO. I could be wrong. Not saying I know it all. Kneeling during the anthem on game day puts all the attention on that one player, which is not good in a team sport, when the attention is for something non sports related. You know, players rebelling during the anthem hasn't exactly been good for business. In other walks of life, you could be fired on the spot for individual protests you decide to do at work or while representing your company.
