  1. QUOTE (Reddy @ May 22, 2017 -> 02:08 AM) so let me recap: ND is incredibly accepting, welcoming and tolerant of gays Students who are also accepting, welcoming and tolerant of gays protest a speech by Mike Pence, who hates gays. Remind me why you're confused, greg? Because 85 percent of the students there are Catholic and I showed you the Catholic position on being gay, the official position. It flat out says this type of sex is wrong. So .... why in the hell are they attending ND to begin with when the Catholic religion is like this?? Just like Pence. Now Reddy educated me on that terrific statement by ND on gays. I LOVE their stance. However if you read what Reddy provided me, there's nothing in that document on the church's position on same sex sexual activity. I'm confused because if they are that worked up to walk out on Pence, they sure as hell should not be attending ND out of protest. QUOTE (SouthSide2004 @ May 22, 2017 -> 02:08 AM) So you approve of the "homosexual lifestyle" despite you acknowledging it's a sin in your religion? Aren't you worried that you might end up in hell for supporting such a sin?!? No. I do what I feel is right. I feel like all organized religions probably have something I disagree with. I'm not perfect. I like my religion for various reasons. I like community worship. I feel good in a church (yes it's selfish of me I guess). I feel good among fellow worshipers. I like to observe people and I enjoy seeing happy people for an hour every Sunday. Sure I approve of the homosexual orientation. I'll try to get it right and use the right word, not lifestyle. Sorry if I offended. QUOTE (Reddy @ May 22, 2017 -> 02:10 AM) The fact that he calls it a lifestyle is still insulting and some pretty s***ty "support" Sorry about that. I definitely approve of all sexual orientations. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 22, 2017 -> 02:17 AM) And they did it in the most civil way possible. They didn't make a scene, they didn't interrupt, they turned their backs and walked out to make their point, yet let him make his speech. Good for them. But greg thinks these kids are stupid for attending a top 20 university because his religion hates gay people I feel like if they are going to protest Pence, they should show some guts and protest everything about ND because the church it is founded on is 100 percent in agreement with Pence on social issues. QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ May 22, 2017 -> 02:38 AM) Being gay is a sexual orientation, not a lifestyle. Expecting a gay person to never engage in same-sex dating, relationships, or sex is unreasonable. Expecting a gay person to magically become straight by drilling it into them that they are evil is much worse. Yeah I agree with your third sentence for sure. Obviously they are not evil. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 22, 2017 -> 02:53 AM) Very few choose a school like Notre Dame for religious/moral/ethical reasons...maybe 5-10%? Then why is it 85 percent Catholic? Well a big reason is the Catholic high schools of which I went to in Chicago feed kids to ND as well as the Benedictine schools. 85 percent are Catholic students! That's 15 percent non Catholic. And they are mad at Pence but not their leaders at ND???
  2. So I was driving today and Hannity was on radio, I guess from Friday. All I read on here is Trump is a chump, doomsday impeachment scenarios etc. Hannity as of Friday said the NY Times and Wash. Post were embarrassing themselves with stories off unnamed sources that have been proven incorrect and Trump did nothing wrong involving the Russkies. I am not making this stuff up, folks. He said this witch hunt is bad for America and Trump will again be exonerated and the Post and Times will be in trouble with their readers if this continues because of what he said is inaccurate reporting. Just relaying what I heard with my two ears.
  3. Glad to see a new Apes movie is coming out. Loved the last 2.
  4. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 22, 2017 -> 01:59 AM) Notre Dame seems pretty accepting of the gay community, despite what you think. http://www.grc.nd.edu/lgbtq-allies/ Cool. I love their policy. I just read it. Very beautiful policy. I think it's a wonderful policy and statement I just read. There's nothing in there about the Catholic stance on homosexuality. Had they gone there it would not be a pleasant discussion cause the Catholic rulebook on the matter is pretty stringent.
  5. QUOTE (Reddy @ May 22, 2017 -> 01:57 AM) I cannot even begin to unpack all of the ignorance in this statement. There is so much wrong here, coming from a guy who a few posts ago professed "I support everybody". Unbelievable. I'm putting out what the official Catholic statement is on the matter, not mine.
  6. QUOTE (Reddy @ May 22, 2017 -> 01:53 AM) I've literally already stated repeatedly that most kids don't choose their college over its religious ideology. Moreover, a historical relationship with a religion doesn't mean a school follows the tenants of that religion verbatim, and in their original context. Do you seriously think that every historically catholic or jesuit institution infuses religion into their required coursework and campus life? I can promise you that's not the case. I'll stop if I'm not explaining myself correctly. You said: "I've literally already stated repeatedly that most kids don't choose their college over its religious ideology." I say: "Most kids don't take a stand and protest a speaker. Upon looking into why they don't like the speaker, part of the reasoning is stuff the people who run their university believe as well." My bad if I think something is out of whack in the reasoning. I would like to stress if I am going against the Catholic rulebook by approving of any lifestyle between consenting adults then too bad for me. I approve of all people and all people's sexuality and beliefs. I welcome all. Nobody can stop me from that, not the Catholic rulebook.
  7. QUOTE (Reddy @ May 22, 2017 -> 01:47 AM) Can you support that the administration of Notre Dame University supports gay conversion therapy? With evidence? Thanks. Notre Dame may not support that, but read the last paragraph of the link I sent. "Homosexuals who want to live chastely can contact Courage, a national, Church-approved support group for help in deliverance from the homosexual lifestyle." So it is official policy to want to help "deliver people" from the lifestyle. You might not want to call it conversion therapy but it's something in terms of trying to get you to quit the lifestyle.
  8. QUOTE (Reddy @ May 22, 2017 -> 01:47 AM) I WENT TO A CATHOLIC SCHOOL! I'M AN ATHEIST. THIS IS NORMAL. OK. But you see no merit to my point at all?
  9. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 22, 2017 -> 01:48 AM) And you are a proud Catholic, right? I said we welcome all people. I welcome all people. I support all people. If its against the rules then I'm breaking the rules. Too bad.
  10. QUOTE (Reddy @ May 22, 2017 -> 01:47 AM) Can you support that the administration of Notre Dame University supports gay conversion therapy? With evidence? Thanks. No. especially since I didn't even know what it was til a minute ago. I didn't know that's all the students were miffed about regarding Pence. That it was that cut and dried. My bad if they were protesting his stance on gay conversion therapy. I guess I'm wrong on my Notre Dame stance. I just thought it weird you'd go to ND if you fully supported gay rights.
  11. QUOTE (Reddy @ May 22, 2017 -> 01:45 AM) Jesus. Loyola is a Jesuit institution, which is a branch of Catholicism, and it absolutely did not support gay conversion therapy. No school that isn't f***ing Messiah University in Missouri would say they did. Good lord man this is ridiculous. Cool. I don't even really know what gay conversion therapy is. Do you deny however that it is still a sin in the catholic rulebook? Do Catholics not run Notre Dame? https://www.catholic.com/tract/homosexuality
  12. QUOTE (Reddy @ May 22, 2017 -> 01:43 AM) They'd only be hypocrites if they chose the school on religious grounds, which the vast majority - I'm sure - did not do, especially those who walked out. This is so easy greg. I know you can understand this. OK I see your point. It still seems strange they'd go to a school run by Catholic priests and monsignors. You are saying they don't think about that at all. Well then why the hell are they thinking about the guest speaker? QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ May 22, 2017 -> 01:43 AM) Greg, threads like this is why I always call you out for having your head in the sand. You literally have zero idea why people don't like Pence and are asking everyone if the kids have a right to not like him. This s*** is maddening No I understand why they hate Pence. My point is they are going to a school where they should hate all the leaders. Cause they share Pence's opinion on the matter.
  13. QUOTE (Reddy @ May 22, 2017 -> 01:42 AM) Yes. Pence supports gay conversion therapy, which is torture. Damn. I'm pretty sure Catholics support gay conversion therapy as well and Notre Dame is a catholic institution.
  14. QUOTE (Reddy @ May 22, 2017 -> 01:38 AM) Uh... have you been paying attention to the Pope at all over the last couple years? And no, Notre Dame as a university does not espouse views like that. So you are telling me it's not a sin? I think it is a sin in the rulebook. The Pope is welcoming to everybody. The Catholics welcome all people. but if push comes to shove I think he says it's a sin because taking part in a homosexual act I believe is a sin. https://www.catholic.com/tract/homosexuality
  15. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ May 22, 2017 -> 01:28 AM) Well, Pence was down for literal torture of gay teenagers Seriously? He wanted torture of human beings? WTF. If true can't imagine him being in the White House as 2nd in command. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ May 22, 2017 -> 01:33 AM) What does ND graduation day have to do with Pence? He shouldn't have been there in the first place. Graduation day is about the students, not some Washington asshat and his religious/political views. Good on those students for walking out. I know. But some schools like to invite speakers. Will Farrell was great at USC. Trump went to Liberty U. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 22, 2017 -> 01:34 AM) Catholics can't be gay? I don't think Catholics can be gay going by the rulebook. I know our church welcomes all people. But I think the official stance in Rome is it is a sin. If I'm mistaken my bad. So my point was how the hell can they go to a school that preaches this? They are hypocrites to only complain one day of the year it seems to me. https://www.catholic.com/tract/homosexuality
  16. QUOTE (Reddy @ May 22, 2017 -> 12:24 AM) greg... I went to a Jesuit University. I'm as atheist as they come. Almost no one chooses their school based on religion these days. Cool Reddy, thanx. I was just wondering if they are the type to protest their beliefs at a graduation ceremony, I'd 'think' they wouldn't want anything to do with Notre Dame to begin with. Cause ND is Catholic and the rules state homosexuality is a sin I believe. That's as bad or worse than what Pence is preaching. What you say makes sense but it seems like it's weird to walk out of the ceremony when each and every day they might consider walking off campus cause of what the campus leaders believe.
  17. This is not a negative statement. I'd like someone to educate me here. The Notre Dame students who walked out went to a university with 85 percent Catholic students. Their main beef with Pence from what I read at least was his gay and lesbian stance. In fact this was written in an article: "The vice president has received harsh criticism from LGBTQ activists, who view him as an opponent of their agenda. Pence is seen by some as a proponent of so-called gay conversion therapy, a highly controversial process of attempting to alter a person's sexual preference, sometimes through physical abuse, that has been banned in multiple states." My question is ... why are they accepting a degree from Notre Dame? I love my Catholic religion but though the religion believes in respecting all people (most churches make a point of saying we welcome all people), I do believe homosexuality is still against the rules so to speak in Catholicism. My point is ... isn't Notre Dame the institution and what it represents actually as bad or worse than Pence?? Why would they go to a ceremony with any of the Notre Dame higher ups to begin with?? Again, educate me please if I'm wrong. But my point is their school should in their eyes be as bad or worse than Pence. What in the hell are they doing going to Notre Dame in the first place if they are against what Notre Dame preaches??
  18. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ May 21, 2017 -> 08:13 PM) This^ he woulda been replaced by anyone. Why? Avi isn't making any money. He, Eaton and Melkster woulda been the outfield. Don't worry. I'm out. Off to church, 5 pm Sunday.
  19. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ May 21, 2017 -> 09:01 PM) Trading Chris Sale was the right thing for this team. Yes but you sighed at the Trout comparison. It's easy to see the value in other team's players but as I said Sale is the pitching version of Trout. A true phenom. But in the same scenario would we have traded Trout? The answer is "yes" if you are going by the same philosophy of rebuild that the Sox are apparently embracing. You know guys like me wanted to keep Sale and buy free agents and make the usual tinkering trades to fill holes. We'd have had Sale and Q starting in a year Avi is breaking loose to go with stars in Abreu and Anderson (I didn't mean Frazier for gosh sakes) and a bullpen that until recently seemed decent. Could we have won a s***ty Central Division? Hmmm..... Some of us wanted to try things with a manager who had a clue, somebody besides Robin (great player; bad manager).
  20. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ May 21, 2017 -> 08:58 PM) Sigh Why the sigh? I see it as the same scenario.
  21. Any Notre Dame grads? I wondered what you thought of 100 students getting up and leaving the graduation ceremony to both boos and cheers when Pence was introduced as speaker. Do you think it's proper to cause a disruption on such a big day for many? My guess is the over-riding memory of graduation for those folks who graduated today (I applaud you all, Golden Domers! ND is a difficult school; Happy Graduation to You!) will be the protest rather than the happy occasion. Yes it is our right that we embrace to be allowed to protest. But is it proper? Those who protested could have simply not attended their own graduation and let the others have their day. I don't have too much of a stance except to say I think protesting outside of the stadium would have been better. Or protesting right after the Pence invitation to speak was announced to try to get it stopped. I'm not crazy about the protestors stealing the show and ruining the day for others proudly wearing the cap and gown.
  22. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 21, 2017 -> 07:49 PM) Mike Trout has all of zero playoff wins, so there still might have been a rebuild even with Trout. This isn't the NBA Then I guess most would have wanted to trade Trout in that scenario, cause Sale is the pitching version of Trout and the majority did handstands of joy after shipping him.
  23. QUOTE (Tony @ May 21, 2017 -> 07:03 PM) No one enjoys a loss. You are OK with the losses because it helps in the greater goal of resetting things. It increases the odds. Speaking for yourself? I can accept that. Some fans do enjoy a loss, that's what pisses me off in reading the threads. They are actively wanting losses and long losing streaks, etc. If you are 'OK' with the losses, fine. I disagree that "no one enjoys a loss." Read some of the threads. As far as your last line, that's what I don't understand. I don't care about the odds. What about the pedro alvarez example? He's as highly touted as this Beer guy. There are no guarantees. I do understand the theory the loss lovers are going by. Believe me I do. I see no reason for throwing away six months of your life wanting your team to lose. If that's not your position and you are just 'ok' with the losses, good for you. Some people, and they can admit it now if they like, actively are wanting L after L after L. I think it's just ridiculous when you have examples of Trout and Alvarez staring you in the face showing you how uncertain the draft can be. And in the NBA Odom and Embiid (if he continues to be hurt). There are no guarantees baby. But a W guarantees me happiness during the W and every moment after the W until the next game begins.
  24. QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ May 21, 2017 -> 07:58 PM) I remember a few years ago everybody was drooling over a kid named Pedro Alvarez, who I believe wound up being drafted second overall that year. How many would have liked to "Tank for Alvarez?" We think alike. Finally.
  25. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ May 21, 2017 -> 07:45 PM) We better not see any posts from you in any draft threads this year or next since you are so uninterested in drafts. I don't think you'll have to think twice about that. Check past draft threads. There's a slight possibility I've asked if the player is good or something but I doubt I've even asked that. Sure I can get hopeful about a draft or a Robert, but generally the draft does not concern me enough to talk about it/write a post about it. It's like fathom in the offseason. He goes about his business and never posts about things that don't concern him.
